
Lumberjacks Axe Lancers with Last Second Basket in Overtime

RIVERSIDE, California- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks traveled to the Fowler Events Center for their second matchup against the California Baptist Lancers. SFA avenged their loss to CBU earlier this season with their 62-60 overtime win. The 'Jacks snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 15-13 overall and 8-9 in Western Athletic Conference play. California Baptist lost their sixth straight for the first time since 1998 and fell to 14-14 overall and 7-10 in WAC play.
The Lumberjacks got the final opportunity to put an end to the game. SFA inbounded the ball with the final possession of overtime at 19.1 seconds left on the clock. Latrell Jossell's jumper bounced off the back of the rim but was cleaned up by Chrishawn Christmas' put-back that gave SFA a 62-60 lead with 2.1 seconds left in overtime. The Lancers last second half-court shot fell short and SFA snapped their four-game losing streak.
SFA found success on both ends of the ball through the first couple minutes of the game, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead. The Lumberjacks forced the Lancers into three turnovers in the first five minutes and held them to 1-for-7 (14.2%) from the field.
Jalil Beaubrun had six of the Lumberjack's first 12 points, on 3-for-4 shooting from the field. SFA's defense kept the pressure on CBU's offense as the Lancers found themselves without a field goal for eight minutes straight. SFA went on an 11-0 run with 8:04 left in the first half to take their largest lead of the night 21-7.
The Lumberjack's PressU defense made their mark in the first half. California Baptist began the game 2-for-14 (14.3%) from the field and 0-for-5 from the three-point line. The Lancers finally found their third field goal of the game with 5:45 left until halftime. Nana Antwi-Boasiako's free throw put a stop to the Lancers 8-0 run and made the score 26-18 with 1:36 left on the clock.
Latrell Jossell's last second step-back jumper sent the Lumberjacks into halftime with a 28-20 lead. SFA's defense had an outstanding first half as they held CBU to 6-for-20 (30.0%) from the field and 1-for-8 (12.5%) from the three-point line. The 'Jacks also had 7 steals and forced the Lancers into 11 first half turnovers.
SFA's offense entered halftime shooting 12-for-29 (41.4%) from the field and 1-for-6 (16.7%) from the three-point line. Jalil Beaubrun was the game's leading scorer and only player in double figures after the first half. He had 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 1-for-1 from behind the three-point line. Latrell Jossell was very involved for the 'Jacks as he had six points, two steals, two assists, and two rebounds.
Frank Staine's three-pointer put a stop to the Lancers 5-0 run coming out of the half. With 14:03 on the clock California Baptist found their first lead of the game at 32-31. The Lumberjacks retook a four-point lead and led 38-34, after SFA went on a 7-0 run.
SFA turned to Latrell Jossell to find the offense that they desperately needed in the second half. He strung up 13 straight points to give SFA a 51-49 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the game. With 2.1 seconds on the clock SFA would have one final chance to end their losing streak in regulation. Matt Hayman drove to the basket but was unable to cash in on the game winning shot.
Entering the first overtime, SFA and CBU were interlocked at 51-51. After falling to a one-point deficit, Jalil Beaubrun drove to the rim where he was met with contact and converted a free throw for the three-point play. With 1:37 left in the game SFA led 57-55.
The Lumberjacks were led by Latrell Jossell (22) and Jalil Beaubrun (16) who combined for 38 of the Lumberjack's 62 points. Jossell also added five steals, three assists, and four rebounds. SFA's offense shot 23-for-61 (37.7%) from the field and 4-for-11 (36.4%) from the three-point line.
