ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico- Stephen F. Austin's track and field team will look to begin their championships season in dominant fashion, as they travel to the Indoor Western Athletic Conference Championships. The championships will begin February 19th and end on February on news20th.
SFA is coming off a week in which they participated in three track meets and posted multiple school records. The Lumberjacks enter the WAC Championships ranked 3rd in the men's coaches poll and the women are ranked 5th.
Head Coach Robert Hansen believes that both squads are entering the championship week in a good spot. "It'll be up to each individual to compete and scratch for every inch to hold our positions or potentially move up, Head Coach Robert Hansen said, "We're excited for the trip, and we understand the gravity of competing in a championship competition."
The men will be headlined by Nathan Kapel and Gideon Mengich. Kapel is coming off another record-breaking performance, in which he broke his own school record in the men's mile. He will be running the mile, 800m, and DMR. Mengich is coming off his own record-breaking performance as well. In his collegiate debut he broke SFA's school record in the 3000m. Mengich will be running in the 5000m and 3000m.
Hunter Murphy and Nicholas Grullon will both be representing SFA in the men's high jump. Sultan Bakare and Emmanuel Ekuma will headline the men's throwers as they will both be participating in the weight throw and shot put. The women are headlined by Kennedy Swann in the 200m and 60m and Christina Mudd in the pentathlon.
The championships will take place over two days and will be the Lumberjack's last chance to qualify and prepare for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts.
