NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Volleyball Team (23-8. 14-2) get set to begin their 2024 postseason run as they host the visiting Jackson State Tigers (19-11, 13-3) in the first round of the NIVC Tournament.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Ladyjacks will look to carry over their success from the regular season into the postseason as they get set for their 2024 playoff run. To start their postseason run, SFA will draw an opponent they are no stranger to seeing as they have met Jackson State both in the NIVC and regular season in past years. The Ladyjacks will look to replicate the result from the last time they met Jackson State in the NIVC in 2017 when SFA claimed a 3-1 home victory over the Tigers. The 'Jacks will be setup to have plenty of success early in the NIVC as they were picked to be one of eight host teams for the NIVC and will be hosting both the first and second round of the tournament. Thus, SFA returns home to the friendly confines of the Pressure Cooker where they dominated the opposition this year as they posted a dazzling 11-1 home record this season and recorded a sweep in eight of the 12 home games they played, and only had one match where they lost more than one set, as they look to continue to take advantage of the rowdy Pressure Cooker crowd.
Tigers at a Glance:
The Jackson State Tigers make the trip to the Pineywoods looking to start their 2024 playoff run with a bang. The Tigers had a highly successful season of their own this year as they posted a 19-11 record, a 13-3 conference record, and experienced plenty of success past the regular season as they defeated Southern and Prairie View A&M in the SWAC Tournament before falling to Florida A&M in the SWAC Championship match. The Tigers had success on both the road and at home this season as they recorded eight home wins and seven road wins this year, as they hope to continue their road success in the hostile Pressure Cooker environment.
Scouting Report:
Katherine Holtman wasted no time making her presence felt as a freshman as she was the enforcer of the SFA offense this year, leading the team in a multitude of major statistical categories that included kills (294), points (346.5), and points/set (3.43). Jayden Flynn continued to be her usual consistent self at the setter position for the Ladyjacks as she followed up a sophomore season that saw her dish out 746 assists, by producing a similarly productive junior season by leading the 'Jacks with 682 assists this season. Defensively, Natalie Guerrero helped lead a prolific freshman class for SFA as she led the team in digs with 327, while Kyanna Creecy turned into a dynamic sophomore middle blocker for SFA as she led the team with an impressive 124 blocks this season.
Jayden James was the backbone of the Tigers offense this season as she posted a team-high 408 kills which translated to a team-leading 460 points this year. Alexis Williams formed a dynamic scoring duo with James as she posted 314 kills and 370 points this season. Karys Dove rounded out the Tigers offense this season with her 696 assists. Trinity Bryant led the defensive effort with 394 digs, while Jordan Jones posted 119 blocks with 32 solo blocks.
Series:
Thursday evening's win-or-go home matchup will feature the sixth all-time meeting between these two schools with SFA leading the all-time series 5-0. The Ladyjacks have had success against the Tigers in both the regular and postseason as they defeated the Tigers in the first round of the NIVC in 2017 3-1, and most recently swept the Tigers 3-0 last season in the South Alabama Tournament.
