NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball Team (0-0, 0-0) gets set to begin their 2024-25 season and return to the Southland Conference when they host the visiting Texas Southern University Tigers (0-0, 0-0) in a Monday evening matchup at the Sawmill.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Ladyjacks will look to pick up right where they left off last season as they begin the second season under Head Coach Leonard Bishop. Last year in his first season overseeing the Ladyjacks Basketball program, Bishop guided the Ladyjacks to a 22-12 overall record and a 14-6 conference record. The 22 wins marked the eighth straight season the Ladyjacks have won at least 20 games, while their 14-6 conference record ranked them third in the WAC. The Ladyjacks success extended beyond just the regular season as they entered the WAC Tournament as the three seed and defeated both Tarleton State and Grand Canyon before falling by just one point in the WAC Championship to eventual WAC Champion CBU. SFA looks to continue their strong play at the Sawmill as they posted a 12-4 home record last season which included two games where they scored over 100 points.
Tigers at a Glance:
The Texas Southern Tigers begin their season on the road with a three-game roadtrip that gets started in Nacogdoches against SFA. Last season, the Tigers compiled a 7-22 overall record and a 5-12 SWAC conference record. The Tigers schedule last season was no cakewalk either as they faced off against a number of household name schools that included Rice, Houston, and most notably the LSU Tigers. The Tigers are led by Head Coach Vernette Skeete who is in her third season leading the Tigers Basketball program.
Scouting Report:
The Ladyjacks carry over five players from last year's WAC Tournament squad to this season in Avery VanSickle, Lydia Cooke-Wiggins, Ituau Tuisaula, Mimi Gatewood, and Trinity Moore. Joining the returners for Coach Bishop are four transfer players in Hope LeMelle, Harmanie Dominguez, Ashlyn Traylor, and Faith Blackstone, as well as two freshman commits in Key Roseby and Cha Gardner. Three of the four transfers in Faith Blackstone, Harmanie Dominguez, and Ashlyn Traylor all averaged double-digit points/game with their respective schools last season which paired with three-point shooting of Avery VanSickle and the low post scoring of Trinity Moore will give SFA plenty of offensive firepower this year. SFA's defense looks to carry over their success from last season, which consistently ranked as one of the best in the WAC, this season as six of their players this year recorded double-digit steals last year with their respective team.
The Tigers will be led by junior forward Jaida Belton as she was named to the SWAC All-SWAC Second Team coming off a sophomore season in which she averaged over seven rebounds a game, 8.2 points/game, and led the team with 48 blocks while having five games of 10+ rebounds last season. Daeja Holmes will look to form a dynamic duo with Belton as she is the leading scorer returning for the Tigers as she led the team averaging 9.7 points/game.
Series:
Monday's home opener for FSA will mark the seventh all-time meeting between these two schools as SFA leads the all-time series 5-1. The Ladyjacks hold a perfect 4-0 home record over the Tigers, and most recently won the last meeting between the two teams last season when they defeated Texas Southern 73-58 on their home court.
