
Ladyjacks Tournament Run Falls Short Against Islanders

HAMMOND, La.- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball team (23-8, 14-2 SLC) faced off against the no. two seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (19-10, 12-4 SLC) in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament.
Both teams kept the first set close as neither team held more than a two-point lead until the Islanders went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. SFA cut the lead down to one after a kill from Caroline Kahle, 9-8. TAMUCC went on a three-point mini run to extend their lead 12-8. Teams traded two-point spurts until Corpus went on another five-point run to take a 21-14 lead. The Islanders scored four of the last five points to secure a 25-16 first set victory.
SFA started off the second set with back-to-back kills from Kyanna Creecy and Harley Krause, 2-0. Both teams were successful in siding out until Corpus went on a four-point spurt to take a 10-6 lead. The Islanders extended their lead to seven before the 'Jacks went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit down to three, 19-16. SFA went on another 4-1 run to bring the set back to one, 21-20. Back-to-back kills from Katherine Holtman and Kahle kept SFA within one, 24-23, but TAMUCC was able to win the second set 25-23 on the next play.
Both teams traded blows early in the third set, but back-to-back kills from Molly Cravens put the 'Jacks up 8-4. Each team traded three-point runs and SFA held an 11-7 lead. Later, Corpus went on a mini run to tie the set up at 17, but SFA responded with a 4-1 run to go up 21-18. SFA finished off the third set with a 3-0 run that included a kill from Holtman and an ace from Krause, 25-20.

Both teams were successful in siding out but Corpus continued to hold a lead. The Islanders then extended their lead to five, 17-12 and then went on a three-point run to make it 20-14. Corpus finished the fourth set on a 5-2 run to take a 25-17 fourth set victory and won the match 3-1.
