NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-1, 0-0) continued their strong play at home to start their season as they defeated the visiting LeTourneau University Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0) 87-68 on Tuesday night.
The Yellowjackets opened the scoring for the evening with a quick layup to take an early 2-0 lead. However, Matt Hayman and Nana Antwi-Boasiako got the Sawmill crowd energized quickly with back-to-back triples to give SFA a 6-2 lead. Following a Yellowjackets free-throw, Hayman and Antwi-Boasiako struck again as a duo, converting layups to give SFA a 10-3 lead. The lead would not last long for SFA as LeTourneau would erupt for a 12-4 scoring run over the next five minutes and held a 18-14 lead over the 'Jacks at the halfway point of the first half.
Consecutive three-pointers for LeTourneau increased their lead to 24-15, however, the Lumberjacks would find their much-needed spark offensively as Juhlawnei Stone and Nana Antwi-Boasiako combined for nine straight points for the Lumberjacks to tie the score at 24 apiece with seven minutes remaining. Deonte Jackson would knock down a jumper to put the Yellowjackets back in front 26-24, however, Dominic Pangonis made sure that lead was short-lived as he would drive home a pair of layups for SFA to put them back ahead 28-26.
With five minutes left in the first half, the Lumberjack offense would reignite once again as they would embark on a 6-0 scoring run to take a 34-29 lead. Both teams started to get into some foul trouble late in the first half as the two schools would combine for a total of eight free-throws in a 60-second span with SFA maintaining a slim 38-35 lead with one minute left. Keith Lamar got the Lumberjacks some valuable end-of-half energy and motivation knocking down back-to-back jumpers to send SFA into the locker room with a 42-35 lead.
Myles Jenkins opened the second half scoring with a driving layup to extend the SFA lead to nine at 44-35. LeTourneau responded with a triple on the next possession to keep it a 44-38 SFA lead. The two teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes as points from Chrishawn Christmas, Juhlawnei Stone and Matt Hayman were offset by seven straight points from Caedmon Liebengood of LeTourneau to keep the SFA lead at 49-45 with 15 minutes left.
Points would be hard to come by for both schools over the next few minutes as neither team was able to score any points outside of free-throws with SFA staying in the lead at 52-49 with 12 minutes remaining. Matt Hayman would drain a three, followed by a Keith Lamar layup to extend the SFA lead to 57-49 at the halfway point of the second half. Keith Lamar would start to find his groove offensively, scoring six straight points for SFA to help lead a 9-1 SFA scoring run that was capped off by a Matt Hayman triple to give SFA their largest lead of the game at 66-53.
