JONESBORO, Ark. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-2, 0-0) lost a defensive battle to the host Arkansas State Red Wolves (3-1, 0-0) in a Saturday mid-day matchup as the Red Wolves claimed a 59-49 win over SFA.
The Lumberjacks broke the ice on scoring against the Red Wolves. Chrishawn Christmas knocked down a jumper to put SFA ahead 2-0 early. The first five minutes offered a heated defensive battle between the two teams as SFA held a slim 5-4 lead, however, a Keith Lamar triple, the first three-pointer of the game for the Lumberjacks, extended the SFA lead to 8-4 five minutes into the first half.
Following a Nana Antwi-Boasiako dunk to extend the SFA lead to 10-7, the Red Wolves would go on a 7-1 scoring run to take a 14-11 lead. However, Clayton Southwick would find his touch offensively as he would rattle off six straight points for SFA to launch them back in the lead 17-14. However. The Red Wolves would once again have an answer as they would go on a 9-0 scoring run at the halfway point of the first half to take a 23-17 lead.
Shortly after the halfway point, Nana Antwi-Boasiako would find his stride as he would help spark a 6-0, SFA scoring run thanks to four straight points to tie the game at 23 apiece. The Red Wolves would end the first half on a 7-1 scoring run to help put them ahead 30-24 over SFA at halftime.
Myles Jenkins opened the second half scoring with a driving layup to cut the Arkansas State lead to 30-26, however, Arkansas St. would respond with a 7-0 scoring run to take a 37-26 lead. The Lumberjacks would come roaring back over the next four minutes, as Matt Hayman would help spark an 11-0 scoring run by SFA fueled by three-pointers from Hayman and Dominic Pangonis to tie the game at 37-37 five minutes into the second half.
The Red Wolves would once again have a response to SFA going on an 8-0 scoring run of their own to take a 45-37 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The two schools would continue to exchange baskets; however, it remained a tightly contested defensive battle and with five minutes remaining the Red Wolves still held a lead at 53-41 over SFA.
The Lumberjacks would not go down without a fight, as Matt Hayman would rattle off four straight points to help spark a 6-2 SFA scoring run and bring SFA to within nine points at 55-46. The Red Wolves would slam the door shut on a potential SFA rally as they would get a pair of free-throws combined with a layup to take a 59-47 lead with one minute remaining. Matt Hayman would knock down a pair of free-throws to close out the scoring in this one, but the Lumberjacks would eventually fall 59-49 on the road.
