
Ladyjacks Survive Cardinal Surge in Five Sets with Career High Performances from Seven Players

SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball team (14-5, 6-0 SLC) traveled to San Antonio for their second matchup of the season with the Incarnate Word Cardinals (9-7, 2-4 SLC).
Both teams were successful in siding out early in the first set as neither team held more than a three-point lead until SFA went on a four-point run with three straight kills from Katherine Holtman and capped off with a kill from Kyanna Creecy, 13-8. SFA slowly continued to extend their lead with a mini three-point run with two kills from Izabella Ortiz and one from Kennedy Jones, 18-11. UIW tried to make a comeback toward the end of the set with a four-point run which cut the lead down to four, 21-17. However, SFA ended the set on a 3-0 run and secured a 25-18 first set victory.
SFA and UIW continued to trade blows in the second set until SFA went on a three-point run capped off by a kill from Ortiz, 13-9. SFA was able to maintain a steady lead for the rest of the set. The Cardinals cut the lead down to three before SFA went on a 4-2 run to secure a 25-20 second set win.
Incarnate Word started out the third set hot as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Later in the set UIW went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead, 11-5. Down 17-12, SFA went on a four-point run to cut the UIW lead down to one, 17-16. Both teams were successful in siding out the rest of the set, but UIW was able to hold a slim lead and pick up a 25-23 third set victory to keep their hopes alive.
SFA jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the fourth set. UIW went on a four-point run to take a slim 13-12 lead. SFA kept it within two points until the Cardinals went on a five-point run to take a 20-16 lead. The Ladyjacks went on a three-point spurt to cut the lead back down to one and eventually tied the set up at 24. However, the Cardinals won back-to-back points and won the fourth set 26-24.
The last time SFA was in a fifth set match was at the Borderland Invitational where they were reverse swept by Southeastern Louisiana. UIW started out on a 3-1 run, but the SFA offense slammed on the gas after that, winning eight points in a row to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The Cardinals slowly chipped away at the 'Jacks lead and cut the lead down to four, 12-8. SFA was able to finish the match on a 3-1 spurt and remain undefeated in Southland Conference play and secure their ninth win in a row.

The Ladyjacks will be back at home to start a four-game home stand on Thursday, October 17th for their Dig Pink game against New Orleans at 6:00 p.m. in the Pressure Cooker.
