OREM, Utah- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks make a trip out west to Utah to take on the Utah Valley Wolverines.
A Look at the Ladyjacks:
SFA comes into this matchup playing some superb volleyball, as they have gone 2-0 to start conference play and are sitting at 13-3 overall on the season. The group as a whole has been playing great, but it's been Ielan Bradley who has emerged as their main option. Over her last six games, Bradley is averaging 14.5 kills a game while putting up double-digit points in each of those matches. She currently leads the team with 226.5 points and 195 kills. It isn't just her that makes this Ladyjacks team so dangerous, though, as Bradley is just one of six players that have over 100 points and one of four players who have over 100 kills. Izabella Ortiz, Ariana Pagan, and Camryn Hill have each crossed the threshold of 100 kills, so it's nonstop pressure on any defense they play. Ariana Pagan recorded her 1000th career point against UT Arlington. On defense, the Ladyjacks have the talent to match up with anyone in the conference. Bella Ortiz has continued to be mentioned among the best blockers in the country, as her 79 blocks are third in the entire nation. Ortiz was named WAC Player of the Week on Wednesday, making it the third consecutive week an SFA player has been given the honor as Ielan Bradley received the previous two. Bradley has also shown some serious defensive skill, as she is second on the Jacks with 58 blocks, which puts her 58th in the country. Alleah Dallas is right behind her with 57, so the opposing offenses have their work cut out for them. In the back, Haley Hoang holds it down, as her 253 digs lead the team and are 33rd in the country. Pagan, Hill, and Jayden Flynn all have over 100 digs, forming a nice trio behind Hoang. These Jacks have been dominant to start conference competition and are looking to keep up that play out west.
A Look at the Wolverines:
Utah Valley comes into this match 1-1 in conference play and 4-9 overall on the season. They are coming off a big five set win over Abilene Christian, and will try to ride that momentum into the match vs the Jacks. Avery Shewell is their leader on offense, as her 165 kills and 202 points both lead her squad. Tori Ellis is the only other player who has over 100 kills and points, so those two play a vital role for the Wolverines. On the defensive side, Caleigh Vagana has been great for them, as her 56 blocks lead Utah Valley. Kendra Nock, Vittoria Price, Ellis, and Shewell all have over 30 blocks, so they can always have a formidable front on defense. Lani Matavao is easily the team leader in digs with 192, as no one else on the team has over 100. They will need some players to step up if they are going to defend home court.
Series: This will be the Ladyjacks fifth meeting with the Wolverines dating back to 2021. In fact, the last time these two teams squared off against each other was the 2022 WAC Championship match, which saw the SFA Ladyjacks defeat Utah Valley 3-1 to be crowned the WAC Champions.
