STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated Tarleton State 4-1 in game two of the series to secure the series win over the Texans. The Lumberjacks improve to 15-14 (WAC 9-5) and the Texans fall to 14-14 (WAC 1-8).
Cade Stapleton got the nod to start on the mound today and produced his best outing of the season going seven innings and only allowing one run off five hits and one walk. Stapleton got the assistance of a sharp defense behind him as 19 out his 21 outs were made on the field. Stapleton's dominance on the bump this afternoon awarded him his first win of the season.
Alex Rodgers and Clayton Loranger provided a strong 1-2 punch for the Lumberjacks all game long, and it began in the first two at-bats of the game. Rodgers started the match with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Loranger was then able to bring in Rodgers from third by beating out an infield single to shortstop.
The dynamic duo struck again, this time on a two-out rally in the second inning as Loranger drove a double down the right field line which scored Rodgers, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Peyton Parker joined the fun by hitting a single and putting the runners on the corners for the Lumberjacks. Parker then stole second base, and as the catcher made the throw towards second, Loranger easily dashed for home. The Lumberjacks quickly took control of the game with a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Tarleton's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third, when they were able to collect two singles and score the lead runner from third with a sacrifice fly center.
Rodgers knew he was due for a home run and he delivered in the top of the seventh as he knocked out a solo shot to left field to lead-off the inning. It was Rodgers' seventh home run of the year, his first since March 10th against ACU.
Reid Boyett relieved Stapleton in the eighth inning and continued Stapleton's dominance by going three-up, three-down in both the eighth and the ninth. The defense also finished the game in style by turning a 5-4-3 double play to end the game. Boyett's solid relief earned him his second save of the season.
Rodgers and Loranger provided majority of the offense tonight for the Lumberjacks as the two combined for 4-for-7 at the plate, four runs and three RBIs.
Since suffering the series loss to ACU to open up their conference play, SFA has now won four straight WAC series.
The Lumberjacks now look to sweep the Texans tomorrow at 1:00, coverage on ESPN+
