A Look at the Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks enter the week with an 18-19 overall record and sitting at an even .500 road record at 9-9. The 'Jacks look to get back to a winning road record after hitting a bit of a rough stretch in the last couple of games, only winning two matches in their last seven attempts, one being against the UAPB Golden Lions.
Alex Rodgers is coming off one of his best series of the year, going 8-for-15 while collecting five RBIs and five runs. Rodgers remains top ten in the country and first in the conference in runs scored per game with 1.41. He also co-leads the WAC in doubles with 15. Rodgers' stellar weekend moves him to the top of the team batting-average charts with .377. The lead-off hitter also leads the team with a 1.092 OPS, 38 RBIs, 101 total bases (22 more than the next highest), and 12 hit-by-pitches.
Rodgers isn't the only Lumberjack slugging at the plate as five other 'Jacks have accumulated a .300 average up to this point of the season. Although the record may not show it, SFA is second in the conference when it comes to scoring category, putting up 7.5 runs per game.
Peyton Parker, Cole Hill, and Rodgers have been some speed demons for the Lumberjacks this season, each having double-digit steals. In 38 stolen base attempts, the trio has stolen 33 bags total.
The Lumberjack pitching staff records a 7.53 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP. Opposing offenses bat .317 against the SFA arms.
A Look at the Warhawks
ULM heads into the match with a 15-25 overall record and a 9-14 record on their home turf. The Warhawks are also coming off bit of a rough stretch, losing five of their last six, and giving up 35 runs in the last two games.
The Warhawks' offense put together a .250 team batting average with Kade Dupont leading the way at .290. Dupont is one of two players to appear in every game for ULM this season and is tied for the team lead of 24 RBIs. Dupont has recorded a hit in 16 of the last 17 matches.
Right behind Dupont is Riley Davis with a .285 average. Davis is the slugger for the Warhawks, leading the team with 11 doubles and five home runs, as well as being the other co-leader in RBIs with 24. Davis also leads the team in OPS with .829.
At the expense of his body, Shawn Dalton Weatherbee's 22 hit-by-pitches is the second most in the nation. When Weatherbee isn't being a ball-magnet, he's hitting .275 with four home runs to his name. He is also leading the team in runs scored with 30.
The ULM pitching staff combines for a 6.23 ERA with ace Cam Barlow leading the way with a 5.14 ERA in ten starts. Barlow has accumulated a 3-4 record and in 49 innings has allowed 28 earned runs.
A Look at the Golden Lions
UAPB enters the week 13-27, taking one game of a three-game series at Texas Southern since the last time these two squads met in Jaycees Field. The Golden Lions are 10-11 on their home field, getting swept by Prairie View A&M the last time they played in front of their home field.
JaKobi Jackson leads the offensive categories for the Golden Lions with a .373 average, 1.030 OPS, 31 hits, ten doubles, and 44 total bases. Jackson reaches base half the time he comes up to bat as he carries a .500 on-base percentage.
Brandon Simon's three home runs this year makes him one of only two players to have multiple home runs this season.
UAPB is ranked 32nd in the nation when it comes to total stolen bases with 72. Isaiah Cohens plays a big role in that statistic as he leads the team with 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
The Golden Lion pitching staff holds a 7.94 team ERA and allows 1.99 walks/hits per inning. Opposing offenses have a batting average of .311.
Last Match against the Golden Lions: Lumberjacks use Early Run Support to Hold off Golden Lions (04/19/23)
Stephen F. Austin defeated University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff 9-6 in the midweek matchup. SFA improves to 17-17 while UAPB falls to 11-25.
Peyton Parker put the Lumberjacks on the board early in the first inning with an RBI single to left field, bringing in Alex Rodgers who led the bottom half of the inning off with a double. The 'Jacks took advantage of some pitching miscues in the next inning as they scored two runs off of three hit batters, a walk, and an error by the pitcher. Rodgers and Parker were the beneficiaries and got the RBIs after both being hit by the pitch with the bases loaded.
Following a one-run single from the Golden Lions in the top of the third, Cole Hill got SFA the three-run lead back with an RBI single of his own. A couple of batters later, Rodgers drove in his second and third RBIs of the game with a hard-hit single to right field.
The scoring continued into the fourth inning when Nolan Brown drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Later on in the inning with two runners on base, Cody Fleischer drove a double to the right center wall brining in those two runners, but got thrown out at third trying to stretch his double out to a triple. Following Fleischer's two-run base knock, the Lumberjacks led 9-1 heading into the fifth inning.
The Golden Lions were able to make some late-game rallies as they drove in one in the fifth with a solo homer and two in the eight with a two-run single. They were able to make the game interesting in the end as they started a two-out rally in the top of the ninth. With runners on first and second, the batter at the plate launched a high pop-up near third base that was able to find the ground driving in one run. The next batter was able to hit a single to bring in another run and make it a three-run ballgame. With the tying run at the plate, Colton Castilaw was able to strike out the last batter to hold on and win the game.
Rodgers and Parker both recorded two hits and a run in the evening, with Rodgers brining in three runs and Parker with two. Clayton Loranger was able to hit an infield single in the game to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
Joe Richter picked up his second win of the year after going 1.2 innings allowing no base runners and striking out three of the five batters he faced.
