NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated Tarleton State 65-60 as they take their second straight win. The Lumberjacks improve to 17-9 (WAC 9-4) and the Texans fall to 14-13 (WAC 7-7).
It was a slow offensive start for both teams as the 'Jacks held a 12-9 lead within the first eight minutes of the game. The Texans were then able to pick up the pace as they went on a 11-point run in the following four minutes to take the lead at 21-12. Tarleton was able to hold around a ten-point lead up until four minutes remaining, then Latrell Jossell decided it was time show the
Texans what he is known for. The Lumberjacks ended the half on a 14-3 run as Jossell went 3-for-3 on shots beyond the arc. He also made the last free-throw of the half to tie the game at 32 as both teams went into the locker room. Both Nigel Hawkins and Jossell finished the half with 12 points.
The start of the second half was unfortunately the same story for the 'Jacks as they only scored four points within the first five minutes while the Texans scored 15 and took a 47-36 lead. But the Lumberjacks refused to go down as always, as they responded with a 17-5 run and took the lead back at 53-52 with under seven minutes remaining. The rest of the game was a nail-biter for everyone in attendance as the score stayed within a possession apart all the way til the end. After the 'Jacks allowed a free-throw with 2:30 left on the clock to tie the game at 60, the defense locked-up more than ever and held the Texans from scoring the rest the game, while the offense was able to put enough points on the board to secure another home victory.
Hawkins had one of his best performances of the season and put up 22 points with four rebounds and three assists. By his side was the lethal sharp-shooter Jossell who finished the night with another game of three or more three-pointers. Jossell ended up with 16 points, going a perfect 4-for-4 from deep. Roti Ware had another solid outing, dropping 11 points of his own along with two assists. Sadaidriene Hall put up eight on the board, but most impressively put up a career-high of 14 rebounds on the night.
The Lumberjacks led the Texans in the following categories: field goal percentage (50.0-39.3), three-point percentage (42.9-35.0), bench points (23-20), blocks (3-1), fastbreak points (13-11), and second chance points (11-0).
SFA awaits UT-Arlington as the Mavericks make their way to the Coliseum on Saturday, February 18th, with tipoff at 2:00 pm.
