2/13/2023 7:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball program returns to the William R. Johnson Coliseum for the first time in over two weeks for two matchups in the upcoming week.
Lumberjacks Statistical Analysis
SFA currently is tied for fourth in the WAC standings with Sam Houston at 8-4, one game behind Seattle U and Southern Utah who are both at 9-4. One win along with a loss by the teams previously mentioned could put the Lumberjacks up to second in the standings.
The Lumberjacks are ranked first in the conference in the following statistical categories: turnovers forced per game (2nd in the nation), steals per game (10th in the nation), and field goal percentage (26th in the nation).
Latrell Jossell continues to climb up the ladder of top deep shooters in the country, as he now has the 9th best percentage from beyond the arc in the nation and first in the conference. Jossell has made at least three three-pointers in the last four games and he looks to keep that going coming into the home stand. He currently sits at a 45% three-point percentage (58-for-129) and is now up to 12 points per game after scoring double figures in the last four matches.

A Look at the Texans
The Texans enter the Sawmill seventh in the WAC with a 7-6 conference record and a 14-12 overall record. The 'Jacks have a prime opportunity to take advantage of the Texans this week, as they come in with a 2-10 away record.
Since making his full return from injury, Freddy Hicks has scored double-digits in his last five games. Although missing 11 games, Hicks leads the team with 16 points per game and is one of the top team leaders in rebounds.
Lue Williams will be another one to watch for as he leads the attack on the offense, both in the paint and beyond the arc. Williams has a 43.4% field goal percentage (99-for-228) and a 41.3% three-point percentage (38-for-92). He averages 11.1 points per game.

A Look at the Mavericks
UTA has struggled to find success this season, especially in their conference matches. The Mavericks are near the bottom of the WAC standings at 4-8 and 9-16 overall on the season. The 'Jacks will have another good opportunity against a team who has struggled on the road, as the Mavericks are 3-6 on games away from Arlington.
One thing the Mavericks do well is getting the offensive rebounds, as they are ranked first in the conference and eighth in the nation in that category. With 13.52 offensive rebounds per game, the 'Jacks will have to fight on defense to get the Mavericks' missed shots and keep the ball out of their hands.
Shemar Wilson takes charge on the rebounds, leading the team with 188 total (87 offensive and 101 defensive). Wilson is 12th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game with 3.62. He also is a major force for the Mavericks in the paint, as he is 87-for-158 inside the arc (55%). Wilson also makes up 23 of the team's total 74 blocks, the 'Jacks need to be careful going up for a bucket against him.
Kyron Gibson averages 11.2 points per game, which is the most on UTA. He's going to be a threat all over the court as he has recorded at least 100 shots both inside and outside the arc. Gibson is also not afraid to spread the ball around, as he leads the team with 96 assists.
The Lumberjacks have only won two out of the last six matches against the Mavericks in the Coliseum, but they look to turn that around this Saturday.
