HOUSTON, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin track and field team will travel to Houston, Texas to take part in the Robert Platt Invitational. The meet will be hosted by the University of Houston and begin January 20th.
The Lumberjack's throwers will be competing at full force. Nearly every thrower had personal bests, last week in Fayetteville. The women were led by Senior Jayla Hooper's school record performance in the shot put, along with her WAC leading performance in the weight throw. The men will look for another strong performance from Senior Cameron Steward. Steward's 4.5 last week was a personal best, in the weight throw.
SFA's sprints will be highlighted by Joseph Harding. Harding missed the school's indoor 60m record by .01 seconds, last week. Head Coach Robert Hansen is very confident in his team's strong contingency of young sprinters with high expectations.
Stephen F. Austin's distance group will be "middle distance heavy". 5000m and 3000m school record holder Clark Otte will lead a group of strong milers into Houston. The Lumberjacks will also be looking for a dominant performance in the 800m as well.
Coach Hansen said, "we're very excited as a program, for this meet. We have a lot of Houston area athletes in our program, so this is our best indoor opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd. We're focused on competing at a high level and honing in on our process. We want to do a great job executing our competition plan. This will help us to yield great results when they matter during championship season."
Earlier this week, Senior Branson Ellis took home WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week. Ellis won the Arkansas Invitational with a mark of 5.60m. He is also 4th overall in the nation and leads the WAC in pole vault.
The Robert Platt Invitational will be hosted by the University of Houston Friday morning, in Houston, Texas.
