HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball program looks to take down the Bearkats at their home court for the first match of two between the two rivals in the 2022-2023 season. The Lumberjacks are looking to respond after their tough loss against the Thunderbirds.
Lumberjacks Statistical Analysis
Although suffering a hard-fought loss last Saturday, SFA still sits tied second in the WAC standings with three other teams at 5-1.
One positive to take away in the match against Southern Utah was the Lumberjack's ability to still being able to force turnovers aggressively. The 'Jacks move back into the top three in the country in turnovers forced per game at 19.42.
The Lumberjacks are currently ranked 15th in the nation (2nd in the WAC) in three-point field goal percentage with 39.1% from deep. Latrell Jossell leads the way with 40 made three-pointers and shooting a conference-leading 42.1%. AJ Cajuste follows Jossell with 22 made three-pointers and shooting 45.8%.
SFA is ranked 3rd in the WAC shooting 48.1% from the field. They are led by Sadaidriene Hall who is shooting 59.6% from the field, followed by Nana Antwi-Boasiako who is shooting 57.1%.

The Bearkats currently have a 13-5 overall record and a 3-3 WAC record. They tend to defend their home court pretty well as they have a 5-1 record in Huntsville.
Although losing half of their last six games, the Bearkats are ranked top five in the nation in the following statistics: bench points per game (3rd), scoring margin (4th), turnover margin (5th), turnovers forced per game (4th). All of which is first in the WAC, minus turnovers forced per game, which the Bearkats are one spot behind the Lumberjacks of all teams in the country. This game will come down to whoever can turn the ball over the least.
One category where Sam Houston does have the very slightest advantage over SFA is the three-point percentage. As previously mentioned, the 'Jacks are second in the WAC with 39.1%, while the Bearkats are ninth in the nation and first in the conference with 39.6%. Whoever can make the most deep buckets will also play a significant role in this game.
Qua Grant will be one of the ones to watch for the Bearkats as he leads the team with 13.9 points per game, 72 assists, and a conference-leading 41 steals.

Jaylin Jackson-Posey hit a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining in the second half to secure Stephen F. Austin a thrilling 69-67 win over Sam Houston in a pivotal Western Athletic Conference bout.
SFA improved to 19-8 overall and 11-4 in WAC play, while SH dell to 17-12 and 12-4 in conference action.
The Lumberjacks opened up a 18-point first half lead and went into the break with a 41-28 advantage. SFA shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the field in the first half and went 7-for-13 from three point range. SFA executed its offense in the second half and shot 43.4 percent (10-for-23) from the field.
For the game, the 'Jacks shot 51 percent (26-for-51) from the floor.
Gavin Kensmil scored a game-high 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field. Latrell Jossell dropped 15 points and finished 4-for-6 from three-point range.
Jackson-Posey added 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field.

Southern Utah defeated Stephen F. Austin 67-58 which ends SFA's 15-game conference winning streak. The Lumberjacks fall to 13-6 (5-1 WAC) and the Thunderbirds improve to match the 'Jacks at 13-6 (5-1 WAC).
What was another strong defensive first half by the 'Jacks, was overshadowed once again by the same miscues from the end of their last game against the Trailblazers. In the first three minutes of the game, they were able to go up on a 4-0 lead and held the Thunderbirds from scoring. However, the Lumberjacks committed eight fouls and five turnovers in the first six minutes of the game. That allowed the Thunderbirds to go on a ten-point run and gain all the momentum for the half. In the first half, the 'Jacks committed a total of 14 fouls and nine turnovers.
The Lumberjacks struggled to find their groove in the first 20 minutes, only making 33.3% of their shots. Fortunately, their defense was able to keep them in the game as they forced the Thunderbirds to turn the ball over 13 times and drew eight fouls. Both sides were unable to grow a double-digit lead in the first half.
The last two and a half minutes showed a hopeful sign of things to come as they went into halftime with a 10-4 run thanks to some clutch threes from Latrell Jossell and AJ Cajuste.
Cajuste picked up where he left off and started the second half with a quick three and led the Lumberjacks to a 16-8 run in the first seven minutes and gave the 'Jacks their biggest lead of the game at 45-39. Unfortunately, the Thunderbird's offense responded quickly and within the next six minutes, they went on a 17-2 run which put them back in the lead 56-47. The 'Jacks were not done yet, as they able to shrink the deficit to three points after going on a small six-point run. However, the offense failed to get any sort of momentum going in the final six minutes and eventually fell to Southern Utah, giving the Lumberjacks their first conference loss in nearly a year and first loss in eight games.
