LAKE CHARLES, La. – Stephen F. Austin cross country started its season at the McNeese Season Opener.
The Ladyjacks finished first overall with a 47 (52:31), while the Lumberjacks placed fourth with a 60 (1:32:32).
Rachel Taylor finished second (10:03.03), Maggie Marshall placed eighth (10:32.3), Isabel Borrego crossed the finish line in 10th (10:36.0), Hadley Watts placed 13th (10:39.2) and Katherine English finished 14th (10:39.6).
The Ladyjacks placed five in the top 15 to clinch the team victory.
"The ladies executed a really nice race. Rachel put herself in great position right away and jumped into the top pack of six women and one-by-one most of them fell off and I'm proud of how she competed," said SFA head cross country coach Robert Hansen. "Our younger women started off conservative and worked their way through the field nicely over the second half of the race."
On the men's side, Maxwell Murphy placed third with a time of 17:54.3. Lewis Mills finished 10th (18:14.3), Wyatt Hoover crossed the finish line in 12th (18:22.3), Anthony Parra finished 17th (18:57.9) and Benym Fantue placed 18th (19:03.1).
"Max and Lewis started in the top group from the gun and Mac was really gutsy. He battled over the second half of the race and earned a strong third place finish," Hansen said. "We had a contingent of freshmen who competed really well, led by Wyatt Hoover. As this entire group matures, they're going to be a force. I'm excited for what the future holds."
