NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The SFA cross country team will host the Stephen F. Austin Opener, Saturday September 17th.
The Lumberjacks are coming off an impressive performance at the McNeese Opener. The men's team was able to finish 4th overall, led by a 3rd place finish from Maxwell Murphy. The Ladyjacks were able to finish 1st overall, after Rachel Taylor's strong 2nd place finish.
Coach Robert Hansen describes this weekend's meet as the biggest collegiate invitational SFA has hosted in a number of years. He also looks forward to having nine universities with representation coming on Saturday.
Stephen F. Austin will be hosting the WAC championship on this same course in six weeks.
Coach Hansen sees this opener as an early preview and advantage for that. "Our men, led by Max and Lewis, are training at a really high level. I expect them to come out and battle. But beyond those two, we're pretty young and most of our group will see the 8km distance for the first time in their career. It should be interesting to see how they navigate this added distance."
When asked about the women's team, Coach Hansen said
"Rachel is more fit than she's ever been. I anticipate she'll stick her nose in this race and compete very hard. We have a lot of ladies behind her making collegiate debuts at 3-miles, and I believe they're prepared to compete well."
The opener will take place at Pecan Acres Park and will kick off at 7:30am.
