
SFA Splits Series Opener vs. ACU

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – WAC Southwest Division Champion Stephen F. Austin split its doubleheader versus Abilene Christian Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats (24-24, 14-9 WAC) edged the Ladyjacks 2-0 in the series opener, and SFA (28-22, 18-5 WAC) bounced back with a decisive 7-2 victory.
In game two freshman Alexis Telford was dominant in the circle the Ladyjacks. The lefty tossed 5 1/3 innings, scattered four hits, allowed two runs, and no walks and fanned eight batters. Brooke Gainous entered in relief and threw the remaining 1 2/3 innings and allowed no hits and no runs.
Offensively, the Ladyjacks got to business in its part of the first inning. Sydnee Hebert's sacrifice fly to score Gabby Garcia and Mackenzie Bennett's RBI double down the leftfield line to push across Camryn Middlebrook put SFA up 2-0.
Hebert drilled a solo home run in the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
ACU cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning, but SFA responded in its part of the fifth inning when Lexi Benson delivered a 3-run home run to center field. Emily Berryhill added a solo home run in the sixth inning.
As a team the Ladyjacks pounded out 10 hits.
Hebert batted 2-for-2 and Bennett finished 2-for-3. Mikaelah Burkhead batted 2-for-3.
WAC Tournament
SFA and Grand Canyon are battling for the No. 1 seed for the WAC tournament and the Ladyjacks can settle for no worse than the No. 2 seed.
SFA will know where it stands Saturday evening.
