Volleyball Axes Bearkats at Home

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated Sam Houston 3-1, Thursday night. SFA improves to 19-3 (7-2 WAC) while SHSU falls to 6-17 (3-6 WAC).
SFA jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first set courtesy of 7-0 run and ended up winning the first set 25-15. In the second set, points were traded between the teams. SFA had the longest scoring run at four in the set but SHSU won it in extras by a score of 27-25. The third set was similar to the second as each team went on a couple scoring runs, Sam had the longest run with five points, but SFA came out on top, 25-22. In the fourth set, SFA jumped out to a 8-2 lead but SHSU came back to make it 12-11. After that SFA went on a 7-2 scoring run with one of those points coming as a result of a red card being issued to Sam Houston. SFA won the fourth set by a score of 25-19 to secure their seventh conference win.
Izabella Ortiz had a stellar performance with a career high 17 kills as well as two blocks. Payton Cerny and Ielan Bradley joined Ortiz in the scoring attack with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Ariana Pagan recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 18 digs. Jayden Flynn had 31 assists, while Maddy Bourque recorded 23. Haley Hoang once again led the team in digs with 20, followed by Pagan's 18.
SFA heads to Edinburg next for a matchup against University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) on Thursday, October 27th at 6:30 p.m.
