'Jack and 'Cards Split Doubleheader on Friday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks convincingly took the first game of the series on Thursday, splitting the doubleheader with the Cardinals on Friday to take a 2-1 series lead heading into the final game on Saturday. SFA moves to 10-13, 8-7 in SLC play.

Game 1 | SFA, 11-1
The first inning for the Lumberjacks was exactly what the home team needed to continue yesterday's momentum, immediately capitalizing off a 3 RBI homerun from Jordan Monacy, as well as a 2 RBI double credited to Jake Zarrello to claim a 4-0 lead right away. The offense evened out during the top end of the matchup, as SFA scored two more runs in the third (RBI doubles from Monacy and Sean Moore), along with four tallies in the fourth inning, highlighted by a 2 RBI home run for Kade Clemens.

Monacy led the way for the Lumberjacks with 4 RBI's in the ballgame, followed by two from Kade Clemens. The 'Jacks dominated Game 1 in the RBI department, totaling 11 to UIW's one.

Game 2 | UIW, 15-9
Another high scoring game took place at Jaycees Field in the second game of the doubleheader, but UIW was the squad who set the tone in this one. The Cardinals scored four quick runs in the first inning, two coming from SFA errors, but UIW was able to push the issue even more in the second, jumping out to a 8-2 lead after a 3 RBI double from Noah Brewer. The Lumberjacks connected on two critical home runs in the fourth (Zarrello and Monacy) to close the UIW lead to two (10-8), which would be eventually cut to one after Cameron Crawford reached base on a fielding error for a RBI to cut the lead to one after four complete innings.

The Cardinals responded in the fifth inning with five runs on six hits to gain a 15-9 lead in their half of the inning, where the Lumberjacks were unable to create an offensive system to match the run, but it was all the Cardinals needed. SFA had a chance to create another offensive sequence in the bottom of the seventh, but left three base runners stranded.
