Lumberjack Soccer Dominates Shot Count in Spring Opener
2/5/2021 10:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA soccer team dominated possession and racked up an impressive edge in total shots and shots on goal on Friday night against UT-Tyler to open the spring season. A timely goal from the Patriots in the second half proved decisive, however, and proved to be enough to defeat SFA by a 1-0 score. The Lumberjacks record is evened up at 2-2-2 after the result, which came despite a 62-38 percent edge in possession and a 26-6 edge in total shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
From the early going, the Lumberjacks were aggressive on the attack, registering seven shots in the game's first 20 minutes, including four on frame to force saves by Patriot goalkeeper Camri Cecil. The Lumberjacks kept up the pressure on the offensive end, as Carli Arthurs and Katelyn Termini in particular continued to carve their way through the heavy defensive presence from UT-Tyler. An attempt from Arthurs in the 30th minute was turned away by Cecil, as was an attempt two minutes later by Caylon McMillan. By the time the halftime bell rang, the Patriots had been badly outshot 14-2 by the hosts, and it seemed like a matter of if, not when, the 'Jacks would break the scoreless tie.
In the second half, the Lumberjacks had four quick looks on goal in the first 15 minutes of play that were either blocked or just missed the goal. Unfortunately, a well-placed ball in the game's 63rd minute by Kiersten Ehler of UT-Tyler got past Koral Hughes in goal to break the draw. The 'Jacks spent the next 20 minutes throwing everything they had at the Patriot goal, with Termini missing an equalizer by mere inches in the 87th minute, and the Lumberjacks simply ran out of time after that, failing to draw level despite a 12-4 edge in second-half shots.
LEADERS
Carli Arthurs led SFA with seven total shots, including five on goal, while Termini and Jamie Jezierski each tallied five shots apiece. McMillan and Elise Davis registered three shots each. Madeline Talbot registered a clean first-half between the sticks, making one save.
