Lumberjacks Usher in Minatta Era with Double Overtime Thriller in San Marcos, 2-1

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Katelyn Termini pounced on a loose ball and slotted it into goal in the game's waning seconds to give the Lumberjack soccer team a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Texas State on Friday in the first game of the 2020 fall non-conference schedule. The game was the first in the Tony Minatta coaching era, and moved SFA to 1-0 on the young season.
After the host Bobcats broke open the game's scoring in the 16th minute and took that 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission, the Lumberjacks racheted up the intensity in the second half. The 'Jacks got three shots off in quick succession in the game's 51st minute, and Vivyan Gonzales forced a save with her attempt in the 56th minute of play. Finally, the Lumberjacks found an equalizer off the foot of fifth-year player Carli Arthurs, who fired off a rocket from distance that went over the outstretched arm of the Bobcat keeper and caromed off the crossbar into goal.
After neither side found a golden goal in the remainder of the second half, the game would go into the first overtime period, where Madeline Talbot stood stoic in goal and made three saves to give the Lumberjacks a chance at their own winner. After another contentious overtime period, Destiny Davis found herself in position to end the game, only to have her attempt knocked away by the Bobcats' charging keeper. The deflected ball ended up in the proximity of Termini, who finished the play with a well-placed kick with mere seconds left on the clock to clinch the SFA victory.
Talbot finished with eight saves in 109 minutes between the sticks to earn the victory.
SFA is back in action on Sunday in Nacogdoches, playing their first home game of the fall 2020 season. Kickoff for that game is set for 1:00 pm at SFA Soccer Field.
