Lumberjacks and Wildcats Battle to Double Overtime Draw in Nacogdoches on Sunday, 1-1

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Sunday's match between the Lumberjack soccer team and the Wildcats of Abilene Christian was a very even match, with the contest ending in a 1-1 draw in overtime. With Sunday's result, SFA now has a 1-0-1 record on the season.
SFA's first and only score of the game came in the 22nd minute as Destiny Davis was driving into the box but was brought down from behind in the box by an ACU defender, leading to a penalty kick taken by Katelyn Termini. Termini's kick from the spot made it past the Wildcat goalkeeper to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived, however, as a free kick for the Wildcats in the 38th minute led to an unfortunate SFA own goal, tying the game at 1-1.
For the remainder of the game, both teams had very good looks at goal, but failed to get the ball into the net. A pair of great attempts at goal off the head of Morgan Wessling forced saves by the Wildcat goalkeeper in the game's 35th minute, while Teia Haynes barely missed a go-ahead goal in the 67th minute with a shot off the left goalpost. A corner kick for the Wildcats nearly lead to a goal, but was denied by Madeline Talbot who made a stellar save, one of six stops for the senior on the day. Talbot got some help from her defense in the 76th minute, after she charged off her line to stop a breakaway by Wildcat's forward Christina Arteaga. Arteaga got past Talbot and flicked a shot at the SFA goal, only to be denied by Lauren Prentice, who blocked the shot at the line to keep the game level.
A final last push by the 'Jacks in the 89th minute saw Carli Arthurs nearly slip a powerful low shot past ACU keeper Erin Smith, who didn't field the ball cleanly on the initial reception but was able to corral the ball and end the scoring threat before the end of regulation.
A full 90 minutes of action was not enough to produce a winner, so the teams went on to play both overtime periods as well. Although both sides would create dangerous chances in each extra session, no golden goal was produced and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The two sides showed out offensively, as ACU narrowly out-shot the 'Jacks 23-21 and tied with seven shots on frame apiece. Termini and Arthurs each took four shots apiece for the 'Jacks, while Morgan Wessling was a force in the air, directing three shots on goal in the contest.
The Lumberjacks will next take the field on Sunday, September 13th, at UL Lafayette with kickoff set for 1:00 pm.
