NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Lumberjack soccer team battled the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas to a 2-2 draw on Sunday at SFA Soccer Field. Katelyn Termini and Carli Arthurs each scored one goal apiece in the match, which moved SFA's record to 2-0-2 on the season.
The Lumberjacks started off strong and took the early advantage in the first half as in the 27th minute as Carli Arthurs took a pass from Termini and fired a low shot to the left side of the goal to give the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead. The Lumberjacks doubled their lead early in the second half in the 50th minute, as Termini fired a rocket off her left foot from a good distance to beat the UCA keeper and give the 'Jacks a 2-0 advantage. SFA also had another opportunity to put another point on the board with 12 minutes left in the first half, as Termini once again found the back of the net, only to have the goal waved off due to offsides.
The Sugar Bears threatened with some shots that could've put them on the board earlier throughout the game, but Madeline Talbot stoo stalwart in goal to deny the visitors. However, in the last ten minutes of the game, the Sugar Bears turned on the pressure and turned the tide of the contest. A defensive miscue by the 'Jacks in the 81st minute of play allowed the Sugar Bears to score and cut the lead in half. Unrelenting, UCA continued to keep the pressure on late in the contest and scored once again in the 85th minute to tie the game and force overtime.
The 'Jacks nearly found a golden goal during the first overtime following a corner kick as Colleen Feagins passed the ball to Arthurs, whose headed attempt at goal was well struck but snared by the UCA goalkeeper. Talbot made a pair of clutch saves in the second overtime period, with the most important save coming off of a UCA corner kick with under a minute remaining. Without a game-winning goal coming for either side, the game ended in a draw after 110 minutes of play.
Talbot finished with five saves on the day during 110 minutes played in goal. Termini finished with a goal and an assist, while Arthurs netted her second goal of the season and Sophie Smith dished out an assist, her first of the campaign.
The Lumberjacks next match is a rematch against Central Arkansas in Conway on Friday, October 2. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:00 p.m.
