
SFA Splits Pair of Games on Opening Day of Mardi Gras Classic

MOBILE, Ala. -- The SFA softball team split a pair of games at the Mardi Gras Classic on Friday, dropping a tight first game to Jacksonville (3-2), before roaring back to take the nightcap against AAC foe Memphis by an 8-5 score.
Sophomore Kassidy Wilbur struck out nine Jacksonville hitters over seven innings of work, but it was not enough as the SFA Ladyjacks fell to the Dolphins 3-2. In addition to her nine strikeouts, Wilbur (2-1) threw seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits and walking five for SFA (6-4).
Freshman Shaylon Govan led the way offensively for the Ladyjacks, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with an RBI. Senior Madison Clements furnished a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3.
GAME ONE SUMMARY
The Ladyjacks were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. SFA got an RBI single from Govan, scoring sophomore Alex Hedspeth from second base.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

SFA's offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including RBI singles off the bat of Mackenzie Bennett and Madison Clements. The 'Jacks capped off the scoring with an RBI walk by Govan, taking a 7-1 lead in the contest.
The Ladyjacks then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the sixth inning after the Tigers cut it to 7-4. SFA pushed across a run on Clements' two-out RBI double, which brought the Ladyjacks lead to 8-4. Memphis put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but SFA held on for the 8-5 win. Kassidy Wilbur pitched three innings of relief for Kriesel, allowing one run while adding three more strikeouts to her total on the day.
