SFA notches second clean sheet of the season in Sunday matinee
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team wasted little time getting on the board in Sunday's matinee game against the Tigers of Texas Southern and led nearly wire-to-wire, winning 4-0 to improve to 2-3 on the season. Morgan Wessling's game winning goal came just 58 ticks into the contest, and was the first in an SFA uniform for the junior in just her second appearance for the 'Jacks. Sophia Fondren, Katelyn Termini and Peyton Graves also found the back of the net for the Ladyjacks, who put half of their 14 shots in the game on target.
After opening the scoring early on, the 'Jacks tacked on another goal in the 26th minute off the foot of Katelyn Termini, which gave them a 2-0 halftime lead. Fondren's scintillating blast in the 58th minute and an 84th minute strike from Peyton Graves rounded out the scoring for SFA, which has 12 goals in five games for a 2.40 goals-per-game average.
OF NOTE
• Fondren tallied a goal and an assist in the contest, with the latter marking the 12th of her career and moving her into a tie for ninth with Summer Bradford (2005-08) for ninth on SFA's career assists leaderboard.
• Kenady Carlile doled out a pair of assists in the contest, including serving in the ball for Wessling's game winning tally in the opening minute. The redshirt freshman now has three assists in five games this season, tying Termini for the team lead.
• SFA has recorded two clean sheets (shutouts) in three home matches in 2019.
• The Ladyjacks were able to play a total of 22 players in Sunday's contest.
• Sunday's victory was head coach Wally Crittenden's 75th victory at SFA in his seventh season at the helm.
COACH CRITTENDEN'S THOUGHTS
On his team's performance in Sunday's game:
"I thought we started a bit flat, certainly scoring the early goal was a display of great execution, energy and focus. For Morgan to get on the score sheet like that in just her second game this season made a great impact. From a soccer standpoint, I thought we were a bit tired and had some heavy legs out here on a really hot Sunday, which challenged us. We addressed some of those issues at halftime so that we can form some good habits that will carry us through these Sunday games, since this is our first 1:00 Sunday game this year. It was certainly a new environment for our kids to go through, they responded well at half and I thought the soccer we played in the second half was much better and more sustained soccer. I thought Texas Southern came in with great energy and intensity, a great mentality and they came to play and created some dangerous moments as you'd expect out of teams at this level."
On his team's early scoring in home games this season:
"It's huge to get on the scoreboard early in these games, and I'd add that that's now three straight games where we've scored off of a corner, so we feel great about those. We had three goals in the run of play today, we've got great variety in our goal scoring right now and every time you can get those early goals it sets a tone and expectation for the match. Right now our kids are playing with great confidence, we got a shutout today, and all of those things are forming habits and creating a foundation that can take us very far."
