NACOGDOCHES. Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team played a tight match with Southland Conference rival Northwestern State on Friday night to open league play, ultimately falling by a 1-0 score. SFA moves to 3-5 on the season and 0-1 in league play with the result.
SFA and NSU played a physical affair on the narrow turf football field, which contributed to the defensive struggle. Northwestern State broke the stalemate on a low shot in the 57thminute which got past a diving Allyson Halliday.
OF NOTE
• Friday's game was the fourth match played by SFA at Nacogdoches High School in the past three seasons, and they have a 2-2 record in those games.
• SFA will return to action next Friday at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Kick off for that game is set for 7:00 p.m. at SFA Soccer Field.
COACH CRITTENDEN'S THOUGHTS
Opening thoughts on how his team played:
"I think tonight we came out a little slow and a lot of the game went by before we actually started to play with an edge about us. I thought we were organized, I thought our shape-shifting was okay, but they (NSU) certainly had great energy and edge, and it's important in those types of games to possess well and moved the ball well, and that's something we did not do well tonight at all. We have some things to figure out, which we'll do by talking openly and directly about it, and we've got to make sure we have a little better identity in possession than we did tonight."
On the team's focus between now and the next match:
"We're getting back on the field, it's important that we get back out there and address some things we need to address. We'll make sure our character is high, our attitude is great, and look for moments to realign with where we need to be in possession. Good opening game for conference play, titles aren't won or lost on opening night, and so tonight is a good opportunity to move forward and get better from having played this game."
