CHARLESTON, S.C – Freshman forward Colleen Feagins scored her first career goal in a resurgent second-half effort for the SFA women's soccer team on Friday night, but the comeback came up just short in the Charleston Under Armour Invitational. The host Cougars posted a goal in each half to fend off the 'Jacks, who outshot the hosts 6-2 in the second half.
QUICK KICKS
• Feagin's goal in the 74thminute cut the Cougar lead in half, and came after the freshman pounced on a misplayed ball by the Cougar goalkeeper. Feagin's goal came from close range but a difficult angle off to the side of the goal.
• SFA will square off with a second opponent in the Palmetto State before wrapping up their trip, facing off with the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks (1-0-0) on Sunday at the Patriots Point Soccer Complex. Kick-off is set for 11:00 a.m local time (10 a.m CT). UNC-Wilmington defeated Furman 2-1 in Friday's opening match.
• Mari Gillespie's free kick from distance with 18 seconds left in the game range off the opposing crossbar and SFA had a decent look at a follow-up effort as time expired.
• Goalkeeper Allyson Halliday turned away seven shots in the full-game effort.
COACH CRITTENDEN'S THOUGHTS
On facing the College of Charleston in the season opener:
"We couldn't have asked for a better season opener in terms of location and quality of opponent, facing two opponents from a multi-bid league from an NCAA standpoint".
On the team growing into the game in the second half:
"Tonight was a game that we knew was going to demand a great performance, and while we were probably a bit timid and indecisive in the first half, I felt like we grew to be better at the 45 minute mark than we were at the one minute mark, and better again at the 90-minute mark than the 45-minute mark. There's no question that the team grew into the game, and we pride ourselves on our "in-game learning" as a program, and we really challenge our players to grow into the game tactically and mentally."
On Colleen Feagins scoring a goal in her first career game:
"It's a fantastic moment for her. She's spent a lot of time in camp in a different position, and she really came into her own tonight in both of the positions she played in the game. It's great for her, and certainly there's more to be expected and I'm happy to know what we're capable of as a team with players making plays like that."
