MONROE, La. -- The SFA women's soccer team downed the University of Louisiana-Monroe by a 2-1 score on Friday afternoon at ULM Soccer Complex, starting the 2019 season off with a victory. The mid-afternoon contest was a long, hot affair in which the Ladyjacks showcased an improved offensive effort.
"What a challenging environment today", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "Between the heat at 4:00 p.m, the late change of venue and an abbreviated warm-up due to travel and heat restrictions, I was pleased with how we grew into the game".
Kenady Carlile and Katie Jennings both found the back of the net for the Ladyjacks, who outshot ULM by a 22-4 margin. Carlile's goal came off an assist from Katelyn Termini and put the Ladyjacks ahead initially, only to see the Warhawks equalize later in the contest. Jenning's goal was assisted by Sophia Fondren and was the game-winning tally in the contest.
"We need to tighten things up in scheme and possession, but that is a credit to a much improved Monroe team who have the pieces to certainly create great moments this year", added Crittenden. "To win on the road on the road with so many external factors not in your favor is a moment to recognize, Keeping perspective, we will process this as we would any result and be better for playing the game for sure."
The Ladyjacks open the regular season next week in Charleston, South Carolina, with a pair of contests against the College of Charleston and UNC-Wilmington. SFA's home opener comes against Southern University on August 30 at SFA Soccer Field.
