Southland Freshman of the Year Kassidy Wilbur fanned 16 batters in 20.2 innings; Southland Hitter of the Year Margarita Corona went 3-for-6 at the plate with seven walks
NATCHITOCHES, La. – Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Kassidy Wilbur and the league's hitter of the year, Margarita Corona, both earned spots on the 2019 Southland All-Tournament Team Friday afternoon following the conclusion of the conference's championship softball tournament. Comprised of nine field positions and three pitchers, Corona was tabbed as the Southland Tournament's top first baseman while Wilbur was chosen as one of the top three hurlers for the week.
Tournament champion Sam Houston State and finalist Nicholls both claimed four spots on the Southland All-Tournament Team, while third-seeded McNeese and sixth-seeded Northwestern State were each represented with one player.
Tossing 20 and 2/3 innings across the SFA softball team's three games at the Southland Tournament, Wilbur posted an impressive 1.69 earned run average and struck out 16 batters. The right-hander held opponents to a .192 batting average and earned her 20th win of the season Thursday following a near 22-hour game suspension due to weather. Appearing in relief, Wilbur struck out four and allowed just one hit across four and 2/3 innings to lead the Ladyjacks to a 6-1 win over tournament host Northwestern State Thursday afternoon. She tossed eight innings of scoreless ball versus fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana in SFA's first game at the Southland Tournament Wednesday, striking out eight and allowing just two walks. In seven innings of relief work Thursday night, Wilbur struck out four and held McNeese scoreless through six frames.
All told, the Bridge City, Texas (Bridge City HS), native threw 18 and 2/3 innings of scoreless softball across her three appearances.
Going 3-for-6 at the plate inside Lady Demon Diamond in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Corona's presence was felt each time she stepped into the hitter's box. Drawing seven walks, three of which were of the intentional variety, Corona held an on-base percentage of .769 and a slugging mark of .667 for the three games. The senior scored a pair of runs, had an RBI, connected on a double and claimed four total bases for the week.
Corona went 2-for-4 with a double in the Ladyjacks' first tilt of the 2019 Southland Tournament against the Lady Lions, before going 1-for-1 with two runs scored, an RBI and three walks to help SFA eliminate the Lady Demons. Scoring in both the third and fifth innings, Corona rocked an RBI single to center field in the bottom of the sixth to put the Ladyjacks ahead 6-1 for good. The Tucson, Arizona (Tucson High Magnet School), native closed out the tournament with the Cowgirls not daring to pitch to Corona and electing to walk her four times.
