Senior first baseman Margarita Corona and junior pitcher Ashley Kriesel take the league’s weekly honors after leading SFA to a 4-0 week
FRISCO, Texas – For the fourth time of 2019 the SFA softball team is represented in the Southland Conference's weekly honors as senior first baseman Margarita Corona has been selected as the league's Hitter of the Week and junior Ashley Kriesel as Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday afternoon. Going 9-for-12 (.750) at the plate in four Ladyjack victories, Corona held a .800 on-base percentage for the week with a 1.083 slugging mark and six RBI. Picking up her eighth complete game win of the season after notching her second save, Kriesel struck out 11 batters in three appearances and two starts while only allowing three walks in 13 and 1/3 innings of work.
The first SFA player to be named Southland Hitter of the Week since Amber Landry ('18) a year ago, Corona tied the single-season program record for home runs with her 12th dinger of 2019 in the Ladyjacks' 3-2, extra-inning win over Northwestern State Saturday afternoon. Collecting 13 total bases, knocking in a two RBI double and scoring a pair of runs, Corona had perhaps her most impressive week of her fabulous senior season.
To begin the week, Corona went 3-for-3 and was walked once in SFA's final non-conference game of the regular season at the University of Louisiana at Monroe Wednesday, hitting an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give the Ladyjacks a 7-2 lead. She then went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI in the series opener versus Northwestern State, connecting on a two RBI double in the bottom of the fifth in order for the Ladyjacks to retake the lead at 3-2 and hitting an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to mount the SFA's advantage to 5-2. The Tucson, Arizona (Tucson High Magnet School), native scored the Ladyjacks' second run in game two of the series, before wrapping up the weekend with a 1-for-2, two RBI, two walk, one run performance in game three of the weekend set Saturday.
Responsible for two of SFA's three runs in the 3-2, eight-inning walk-off victory over the Lady Demons, Corona crushed a full-count pitch in her first plate appearance of the game for her 12th home run of the season. Her two-run bomb over the left field fence tying the program's single-season home run record, Corona was subsequently walked twice and reached on a fielding error.
Right-handed hurler Kriesel had an outstanding week inside the circle for the Ladyjacks, picking up a save by appearing in one and 1/3 innings of relief to help SFA close out the 8-2 win at Louisiana-Monroe Wednesday. Coming in with bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Kriesel retired four straight and struck out one. The Houston, Texas (Mayde Creek HS), native then earned a complete game win in game two of the Ladyjacks' Friday afternoon doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State, striking out seven of 29 batters faced and allowing just one run. Kriesel capped the weekend by getting her second start of the series against the Lady Demons and going five complete innings with three strikeouts and no walks. For the week, she posted a 1.58 earned run average and held opponents to a .235 batting average.
Kriesel becomes the second SFA pitcher to be tabbed Southland Pitcher of the Week this season after freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur was selected for the weekly conference award on Feb. 12, March 18 and March 25.
