'Jacks drop first Southland series of the season, still sit in first place in league standings
CONWAY, Ark. - Brandon Uhse's RBI single in the third gave the SFA baseball team a brief 2-1 lead but Central Arkansas responded by scoring eight runs through the next three innings to collect a 9-3 Southland Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Bear Stadium.
The loss signified SFA's first Southland series loss in 2019, but the 'Jacks still hold the top spot in the league standings.
SCORING SUMMARY
B1 | Center fielder Josh Ragan started the scoring for the Bears in their first set of plate appearances. After reaching on a fielder's choice, he moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt by SFA starter Jacob Stobart. From there, Marco Navarro did the rest with an RBI single that made matters 1-0.
T3 | Two-thirds of the 'Jacks' total offensive output came in the third and allowed the visitors to grab the lead. One of four Central Arkansas errors on the day allowed Jake Georgiades to get aboard and hustle over to second to start the frame. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jarrod Huber, Carson Clowers drove the senior home with an RBI groundout. Nick Daley kept the line moving with an infield single and swiped second with two outs before Brandon Uhse's RBI double put the 'Jacks up 2-1.
B3 | The 'Jacks' lead didn't last long, however, thanks to Navarro. The designated hitter blasted a two-out, two-run homer beyond the fence in right field to give the Bears the lead the rest of the way.
B4 | Central Arkansas started the process of padding their one-run lead in the home half of the fourth. The Bears pounded out four hits and also benefitted from two walks. Things got started for the home team when Trayson Kubo issued a wild pitch with the bases loaded that let Tyler Smith score the eventual game-winning run. A sacrifice fly by Jay Anderson pushed the Bears' lead to 5-2 before Josh Ragan's two-out, two-run double made matters 7-2. UCA concluded its five-run frame with an RBI single by Navarro that put the hosts ahead 8-2.
B5 | Smith scored for the second and final time on the day when Nathaniel Sagdahl executed a perfect squeeze play at the plate. Sagdahl's RBI was the Bears' final one of the day and upped their lead to 9-2.
T6 | The fourth and final error of the day committed by the Bears helped Georgiades move all the way to third after getting to first on a fielder's choice. Huber brought his fellow senior home for the second time with an RBI single to shortstop.
