Freshman notches one of SFA's four hits in non-conference battle
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Freshman catcher Trey Erwin recorded the first hit of his collegiate career with a single in home half of the seventh inning, but that base knock came after Houston scored 16 of the game's 17 runs to hand the SFA baseball team a 16-1 setback in seven innings at Jaycees Field Wednesday afternoon.
In the first meeting between the two clubs since 2012, the Cougars pounded out 17 hits and scored multiple runs in the first five innings of the non-conference showdown.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | The Cougars got their bats going early, picking up four hits on a trio of runs in the opening frame. Jared Triolo got things going with an RBI double before Joe Davis drove in the eventual game-winning runs on a two-run homer to left that made matters 3-0. SFA starter Trayson Kubo went on to record three of his six strikeouts in the game to escape the frame.
B1 | SFA countered in the home half of the frame by loading the bases on singles from Brandon Uhse and Jordan Monacy as well as a four-pitch walk by Jared Martin. Manny Vasquez put the 'Jacks on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Uhse and trim the Cougars' lead to 3-1.
T2 | Houston's damage in the second came with two outs and with one swing of the bat. Again it was Davis who came up big as the first baseman clubbed his second homer of the day on the first pitch he saw from Kubo. The three-run long ball upped Houston's lead to 6-1.
T3 | Two walks and an infield single given up by SFA relief arm Joseph Sgambelluri set the Cougars up for another big inning. Grayson Padgett delivered a two-run single to the gap in right-center before SFA's lone error of the game allowed another run to score. Houston put a cap on its four-run frame with an RBI single off the bat of David that made matters 10-1.
T4 | All four of the Cougars runs in the fourth came with two outs, too. After relief arm Tyler Starks recorded the first two outs of the frame, Kyle Lovelace pushed a two-run single through the 'Jacks infield to keep the line moving. Padgett added an RBI double before Triolo ended the four-run frame with an RBI single to put SFA in a 14-1 hole.
T5 | Senior left-hander Cody Adams let up the final two runs of the game in Houston's two-run fifth. Kobe Hyland and Johnathon Thomas each drove in a run with a groundout to account for the final 16-1 margin.
