LAFAYETTE , La. -- The SFA Track and Field team will open its 2019 outdoor season at the Louisiana Classics this weekend, one of a total of 14 schools competing at the event during the two-day competition. SFA will bring around 45 athletes to the meet as they look to make an early foray into the outdoor season. The event will be held at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex, with competition beginning on Friday afternoon with the men's hammer throw at 2:00 p.m, followed by running events at 6:30 p.m.
Stephen F. Austin will be joined by hosts Louisiana, Dillard University, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Loyola (N.O.), McNeese State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, North Georgia, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, Stephen F. Austin, Tulane, ULM and Xavier (N.O.) among the meet's field.
The two-day meet will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m., with field events before running events begin at 2 p.m. Live results will be available at RaginCajuns.com.
SFA is looking to build off an indoor track and field season that saw the Ladyjacks clinch their ninth indoor title at the Southland Conference Championship meet. The dominant effort by the Ladyjacks included its fair share of top marks and individual champions by the SFA women. The Lumberjacks put forth a strong opening day effort but were unable to capitalize in the second day of competition, despite registering several podium finishes. Potential is high for both squads as they look to improve upon a runners-up finish for the women last spring and a third-place finish by the men.
Following the Louisiana Classics this weekend, the 'Jacks will compete at the Roadrunner Invitational next weekend, followed by the annual Clye Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin to finish out the month (Mar 26-30).
