SFA headed to USBC’s collegiate national championship tournament for eighth-straight season, Gill makes it fourth consecutive year Ladyjacks will be represented at the USBC’s individual national championships
SMYRNA, Tenn. – For the eighth-straight season, the SFA women's bowling team will be competing for a national title at the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) after the Ladyjacks clinched a spot in the national tournament at the ITC sectional qualifier Sunday in Smyrna, Tennessee. Sophomore Sarah Gill will also be vying for an individual national title after she secured a spot in the 2019 Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) at the sectional qualifying Friday, marking the fourth consecutive year SFA will be represented at the USBC's ISC.
Gill placed fifth among 165 total bowlers competing for a spot in the individual national championship, knocking down 1,266 total pins across six games. With only six qualifying spots available to reach the 2019 ISC Gill rolled games over 200 in the final four games Friday, including recording an impressive 260 score in game four. She will be one of 24 bowlers competing for an individual national title at the Poelking Lanes South in Dayton, Ohio, Monday-Friday, April 15-20.
Four-time first-team All-American Stephanie Schwartz ('18) represented the Ladyjacks the previous three years at the ISC.
A total of seven Ladyjacks competed over the weekend inside the Smyrna Bowling Center at the ITC and ISC sectionals as senior Dakotah Hazlewood finished 21st in the singles qualifying after accumulating 1,206 pins in the six games. Just three pins behind Hazlewood was junior Megan Eaglehouse (1,203), who placed 24th. Senior Paige Beeney claimed 1,129 total pins to finish 47th, while sophomore Dakota Faichnie (1,110) was 58th, freshman Carlene Beyer (1,029) 100th and sophomore Sarah Voiers (1,007) 111th.
The other five ISC qualifiers from the Smyrna sectional include Vanderbilt's reining Southland Bowler of the Month Maria Bulanova, Jordan Newham and Adel Wahn, Arkansas State's Averi Brown and St. Ambrose's Megan Hess.
Needing to finish within the top four as a team at the qualifying event to punch its ticket to the 2019 ITC, SFA captured runner-up honors in Smyrna and was a mere five pins from taking home the title. The Ladyjacks finished second among the tournament's 16-team field after claiming a score of 12,497 in 64 Baker games across Saturday and Sunday. Bowling two four, four-game Baker blocks each day, SFA notched 29 200-pin games of the 64 total. Sunday, the Ladyjacks recorded 18 200-pin games of the 32, including bowling a score over 200 in 10 of the 16 games during the third Baker block of the weekend. SFA also posted team-high scores of 259 and 257 in the opening Baker block Saturday morning.
With their qualifying performance over the weekend, the Ladyjacks are one of the top 16 women's teams in the nation who will be competing for a national title at the 2019 ITC, held at the Poelking Lanes South in Dayton, Ohio, Wednesday-Saturday, April 17-20. Outside of the NCAA Bowling Championship, the USBC's ITC is the pinnacle event of the collegiate bowling season.
St. Ambrose claimed the top spot at the Smyrna ITC sectional with a final pinfall tally of 12,502 as Indiana Tech (12,421) and Mount Mercy (12,010) also earned berths to the 2019 ITC.
