Ladyjack rookie fans 32 in 22 innings of work, posts 0.00 ERA while going 4-0 over opening weekend
FRISCO, Texas – An unblemished 4-0 week, a perfect 0.00 earned run average, three complete game wins and a two-hit shutout over a top-25 opponent on the road, that's a dream start for any collegiate softball player. For SFA softball's right-hander pitcher Kassidy Wilbur, it was reality over opening weekend as the freshman has been named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon following week one of the 2019 season.
The Bridge City, Texas (Bridge City HS), native couldn't have asked for a better start to her collegiate career, going 4-0 over the weekend with three complete game victories in three starts, including a two-hit shutout at 24th-ranked Mississippi State. Not allowing an earned run in 22 innings of work on the rubber, Wilbur struck out 32 batters and walked just seven. She also only gave up one extra-base hit.
In her first start as a NCAA Division I softball player, Wilbur fanned 15 batters to set the program record for most strikeouts by a Ladyjack making her debut. She went the distance in SFA's season opening 6-2 win over Valparaiso, before tossing her second complete game and striking six in the Ladyjacks' 7-1 rout of Middle Tennessee. Wilbur appeared in one inning of relief and struck out a pair of batters as SFA won in walk-off fashion over Middle Tennessee (2-1) Saturday evening. In the 2019 Bulldog Kickoff Classic championship game, Wilbur struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to cap off a 1-0 complete game shutout of No. 24 Mississippi State.
Wilbur becomes the first SFA pitcher to garner the Southland's weekly honor since senior right-hander Makayla Sikes did so last season on March 26, 2018.
