Eight Ladyjacks record points in program's largest Southland win since 2016
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - With four of its seniors playing in the final two home games of their respective careers this weekend, the SFA soccer team made it a point to provide them with some offensive fireworks.
Eight different Ladyjacks notched either a goal or an assist, three had multi-point outings and Katelyn Termini's strike in the 15th minute proved to be the game winner as SFA ran over Nicholls, 6-0, Friday night for its second-straight Southland Conference victory.
SFA's second-straight shutout victory came on senior night as the Ladyjacks honored their four-woman senior class of Allyson Halliday, Mari Gillespie, Tyler Johnson and Madeline Speanburg for their contributions to the program in a brief pregame ceremony.
FIRST HALF
• After testing the Colonels with a pair of good shots in the opening minutes of the game, the Ladyjacks finally broke through in the 15th minute. SFA's first corner kick of the night yielded its first goal, too, as Sophia Fondren booted one to the front of the goal mouth. After a brief scrum, Termini pounced on the loose ball and ripped a hard grounder past Nicholls goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta to put the home team on top for good.
• SFA wasn't done pressing the attack, though. Another corner kick helped the Ladyjacks double their lead as Morgan Wessling sent a cross to Mattie Musser who headed it past Hurmerinta in the 24th minute to make matters 2-0.
• An additional insurance goal was added by the home team before the opening half drew to a close. Sabrina Segovia got loose on an attacking run in the 39th minute and sent a cross to Elise Davis who deposited it in the top right corner of the net to extend the hosts' lead to 3-0.
SECOND HALF
• Nicholls overly aggressive style of play hurt it early in the second half when Peyton Graves was taken down in the box on a run toward the Colonels' goal. After reestablishing her footing, the freshman fired in her fourth goal of the season - this one off of a penalty kick - to push SFA's lead to 4-0 in the 48th minute.
• Wessling's second assist of the night came in the 59th minute when she fed Colleen Feagins for a goal that hiked the Ladyjacks' lead to 5-0 in the 59th minute.
• Before the game came to an end, SFA added one more for good measure. In the 69th minute, Feagins fired a pass to Segovia who nestled a shot into the bottom left portion of the goal to extend the Ladyjacks' lead to 6-0.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Allyson Halliday and Madeline Talbot split time evenly between the pipes for the Ladyjacks but neither one faced an onslaught of shots. Halliday turned aside a pair while Talbot saved one as the Colonels totaled just four shots.
• SFA kept Hurmerinta busy from the get-go by racking up 19 shots through the 90-minute affair. Feagins and Termini tied for team-high honors by getting off three shots apiece.
• Wessling finished with a pair of assists while Feagins and Segovia each put in a goal and dished out an assist in the rout.
• The Ladyjacks' 6-0 win represented the squad's largest margin of victory (plus-six) in a Southland Conference contest since Oct. 28, 2016, when SFA blasted Sam Houston State by the same score at the SFA Soccer Field.
• SFA scored more goals Friday night (six) than it had amassed in its first six Southland Conference games of the season (four).
CRITTENDEN'S COMMENTS
On the overall thoughts of the game | "First and foremost, I'm so thankful for our four seniors and everything they have given to the program. I can't wait to see what the program is going to give them for the next 50 or 60 years. It's a family of champions - we say that for a reason. We take pride in competing for titles every year but it's a family first mentality and I'm very proud of those four seniors, what they have done and what they're going to do.From a game standpoint, I thought we possessed well, we played with good energy and we managed emotions from senior night very well. We executed, played a lot of players and played some great, great minutes. It's always exciting when you can do that because anytime you can invest in every player on the roster it makes the ceiling of achievement go that much higher so we were very, very excited to do that for sure.
On the offense | "You always want to score goals and I'll tell you that we've seen opportunities present themselves in every game. We converted them with really good quality today. We took our chances very well and were able to separate the game and do some different things tacically that allowed us to continue to tilt the game in our favor throughout the middle of the first half. Certainly our processes are the same, our identity continues to grow, our maturity continue to grow and you could see it coming with the rhythm and with the overall level of soccer we've had in past few games. I was certainly very proud of the tactics and things that were executed tonight.
Looking ahead to Sunday | "The message tonight is enjoy it. It's a great evening. Our seniors need to enjoy it and when everyone comes back tomorrow we'll get our shakeout and we'll get started on our preparation process for Sunday. I know we'll be ready for Sunday. It'll be a great test at home but it'll be business as usually when we wake up."
