Junior midfielder has scored a goal in SFA's last three games
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior midfielder Katelyn Termini registered her third goal in as many games, but the SFA soccer team surrendered a pair of second-half goals to Southeastern Louisiana and wound up on the wrong end of a 2-1 result Sunday afternoon at the SFA Soccer Field.
FIRST HALF
• Two of the game's first three shots were taken by Southeastern Louisiana, but SFA's first on-target attempt of the afternoon was a good one. Termini drove the near sideline from midfield before uncorking a laser that found its way past the Lady Lions' Sophie Wendt. Termini's third goal in as many games handed SFA the lead in the 17th minute.
• SFA goalkeeper Madeline Talbot stopped a pair of Southeastern Louisiana shots in the final four minutes of the half to keep the hosts ahead.
SECOND HALF
• The offensive aggression the Lady Lions showed late in the first frame carried over into the second and the visitors needed a little over seven minute in the second to even things up. On the doorstep of the Ladyjacks' goal, Hitomi Konno booted a short pass to Brogan Bernadas who shook off her defender and sent a hard shot past SFA's Allyson Halliday to make matters 1-1.
• In the 76th minute, Ellie Williams pumped in the game-winner for the Lady Lions. Amber Marinero's shot ricocheted off of a player in from of the goal and Williams was right there to send it past Halliday and put Southeastern Louisiana on
top 2-1.
• SFA had a pair of chances in the last nine minutes of play to try and tie things up but Morgan Wessling's try was wide to the left while Kenady Carlile's was gobbled up by Wendt.
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• SFA out-shot Southeastern Louisiana 17-14 and put six of those tries on frame. Wendt made five saves for the Lady Lions while Talbot made both of SFA's saves on the afternoon before being pulled for Halliday to start the second
half.
• With her goal Sunday afternoon, Termini has registered each of the Ladyjacks' last two game-winning goals and has scored three of SFA's last eight.
• Despite the loss, SFA still remains one game ahead of the Lady Lions for eighth-place in the Southland Conference standings. Once the regular season is complete, each of the top eight teams in the league make the cut for the Southland Conference Tournament.
• Sunday's showdown was the final home contest of the year for SFA and the Ladyjacks went 5-5 at SFA Soccer Field this season.
CRITTENDEN'S COMMENTS
On the feel of the game | "In games like there where you know it's going to be tight, many times the mentality is, 'I will not be denied. I'm going to win 50-50 balls.' We knew going in it was going to be a spirited battle against a very talented team. It was kind of a do-or-die game for them with regards to the league tournament picture. I feel that if we would have won we would have locked up a spot, so that's disappointing. You can see the edge that they had was a result of the fact that it was a game they had to win. If we meet that intensity, play with that edge and play with that fight then our quality would take over and tactically we would impose ourselves. The first 30 minutes or so I thought we imposed ourselves. We scored a great goal and maybe should have had one more. In the second half I thought we still had chances but it was always us a step behind. There were good performances from several people, but you need more than several people. When you go back and look at our best team performances, it's a roster game - everyone contributes. Our kids will respond from this, but it was still disappointing. We have to get back on Tuesday, respond and get ready to go."
On hitting the road for the last three league games | "We had a tremendous road performance against Central Arkansas last Friday where we really began to establish what we thought was a great defensive identity. We just have to take our attacking identity that we have established this weekend and come back with that same edge and fight on the road. It'll be a great challenge and our kids have responded to every challenge that has been placed in front of them. You just wish you could learn some of these lessons while still getting a positive result."
COMING UP NEXT
• Hoping to lock up a spot in the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament, the Ladyjacks wrap up their regular season slate with three consecutive games on the road. The first of those fixtures comes out west Friday night when SFA tangles with reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Abilene Christian. The rematch of the 2018 SLC Tournament title bout is set to get underway at 7:00 p.m
