Ladyjacks post back-to-back wins to start season for first time since 2016
JACKSON, Miss. - For the first time since 2016, the SFA tennis team has started the season with back-to-back wins. The Ladyjacks did so by scoring a 5-2 triumph over Jackson State at the JSU Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Much like what happened in their season opener Saturday afternoon, the Ladyjacks never fell behind in their showdown with the Lady Tigers. Kaja Ljubic and Gabi Guilarte started the match with a dominant 6-1 win on the top doubles line over Oni Jones and Lucia Placidi.
Armelle Cerdan and Kyndall Misak locked up the doubles point for the visitors by posting a 6-2 triumph against Ariel Dickson and Nina Zhang.
In singles action, Cerdan extended SFA's lead to 2-0 by breezing past Lily Zhang 6-1, 6-1. Tiboldi's number-two singles bout against Jones was another lopsided result for the visitors as SFA ceded just three games in the match. Tiboldi posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph to put SFA one point away from victory.
Misak put the finishing touches on the Ladyjacks' victory, securing it with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Placidi on the number six singles line. Ljubic provided SFA's fifth and final team point of the match with a come-from-behind win over Nina Zhang in the number three singles match.
Ljubic suffered a 6-1 defeat in the opening set, but forced a tiebreak set with a 6-4 triumph over Nina Zhang in the second. Using the momentum she gathered in the second frame, Ljubic closed out the win with a 10-4 in the tiebreak set.
Saturday afternoon, SFA makes its 2019 home debut. At 1:00 p.m., the Ladyjacks play host to non-conference foe Louisiana-Monroe at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
