Erin Scott secures first victory as Ladyjacks' head coach
LORMAN, Miss. - The SFA women's tennis team started its 2019 campaign - and the Eric Scott coaching era - with a decisive 7-0 road victory over Alcorn State Saturday afternoon.
Competing against a Lady Braves squad that had just five available players, the task was made a little easier for the Ladyjacks who needed to win just one of the two doubles matches that occurred. Darinka Tiboldi and Nida Kamal were the ones who got that win first, besting Biana Birkenstock and Klavdija Bokovec 6-1 on the number two line.
Gabi Guilarte and Kaja Ljubic teamed up in the top flight doubles match and secured a 6-2 victory over Anastasia Vaganova and Stefany Grlj. Kyndall Misak and Armelle Cerdan won their third flight doubles bout by default.
Already assured at least one point in singles action due to there being only five Alcorn State players available, the Ladyjacks clinched the match after Tiboldi took down Vaganova (6-0, 6-1) and Ljubic defeated Grlj (6-3, 6-1).
Guilarte gave up just four games to Birkenstock in the top flight battle, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Continuing down the line, Misak posted her first singles victory in an SFA uniform by scoring a 6-3, 6-3 fifth-flight win over Bukovec. In number four singles, Cerdan finished the Ladyjacks' shutout with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Pytilkova.
Sunday morning, SFA heads to Jackson, Miss., for an 11:00 a.m. non-conference showdown against Jackson State. The Ladyjacks are looking for their first 2-0 start since the 2016 season.
