SFA and Southern Miss Battle to 0-0 Draw in Weather-Shortened Contest
9/7/2018 10:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer
* - Although previously declared a draw, Friday's match did not meet the requisite 70 minutes needed to declare a result. Thus, the game will instead be declared canceled, and will not count against the records of either team.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The volatile and ever-changing Texas weather reared its head on Friday night, leading to a premature cessation of a non-conference match between the Stephen F. Austin and Southern Miss women's soccer teams at SFA Soccer Field in Nacogoches. Persistent lightning in the area, coupled with a downpour that saturated the pitch, led coaches and administrators to call the game for the safety of both teams only 46 minutes into the contest, leading to a cancelation of the match.
"What an unfortunate ending to a good game", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "Both teams were committed to possession and both had good moments in their buildup. I was very pleased with our team's energy and commitment to the game plan and am glad we got that first half in. From a fan standpoint, I was really excited to see how it was going to finish. Thank you to Southern Miss for coming and we wish them safe travels."
A matchup that was tightly contest and featured two well-matched teams was even at the halftime break, despite a handful of chances from both sides to break the scoreless tie. Chief among these for SFA was a well-struck shot from Katelyn Termini in the seventh minute of play, which was blocked by a defender before reaching the goal but had a good chance at scoring. Similarly, a shot in the 31st minute by Sophia Fondren caromed off a Golden Eagle defender before reaching goal. Two great set piece looks in the 35th and 43rd minutes off the boot of Breanna Moore and Carli Arthurs, respectively, had great potential but were placed too high and sailed up and over the crossbar, and so the game went into the break scoreless.
The teams had barely taken the field to begin the second half when a nearby lightning strike forced the evacuation of the playing surface. Despite a dedication from both teams to wait out the storm and try to get the game in, repeated strikes in the vicinity made that an impossibility, and the game was called.
