NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After three straight matches on the road, including affairs against two opponents either currently ranked or receiving votes to be so, the Stephen F. Austin soccer team returns to Nacogdoches for a home tilt on Friday evening. SFA (2-3) will play host to the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss (4-1) in the second meeting in as many seasons between the two teams, and third all-time.
The game will be streamed on Facebook Live via the SFA Athletics main page. Fans can follow the link above to watch the stream, as well as following the game via live stats. Fans are also encouraged to follow the Ladyjacks on Twitter (@SFA_Soccer)
Southern Miss is in its sixth season under head coach Mohammed El-Zare, who has guided the Golden Eagles to a 31-48-14 mark during that span. The hot start to the 2018 season has featured wins over SWAC opponents Grambling State and Texas Southern, as well as Sun Belt foe Louisiana Monroe and fellow Southland program Southeastern Louisiana. The program's lone loss came to Mississippi State, one of three shared opponents on the schedule between SFA and Southern Miss this season. A total of 19 goals in five matches has made the Golden Eagles a veritable threat on offense, as the 3.80 goals per game of Southern Miss is tied for first nationally.
"We're going to be ready, that's a game we'll be excited about", said Crittenden of Friday's match. "Last year, going into halftime leading them 2-0, that result went a long way in teaching us how to close out a game in a tough environment. We're excited about getting them here, we're excited about the soccer we're playing right now and the different lineup variations we have. At the end of the day, I feel confident telling our kids that we aren't going to see anything on Friday that we haven't seen from the strength of our schedule leading up to this game. Southern Miss has been getting some good results and that's good for our team because we want their best shot. There's not a team this year that we haven't gotten their best shot, and we wouldn't have that any other way."
Looking to keep that offense in check as well as find some consistency defensively are the Ladyjacks, whose only losses this season have come to ranked Power 5 programs that have combined for a 15-0-2 record. Furthermore, in the four matches SFA has played apart from those losses (two exhibitions and two regular season), the 'Jacks have not conceded a goal and have posted nine of their own in those contests (all wins). Head coach Wally Crittenden has already posted the most wins of any coach in program history (68), and is looking to secure three points for the Ladyjacks ahead of the imminent arrival of the conference schedule next week.
WE KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT WINNING
SFA's marks of 157 wins and a .732 winning percentage heading into the 2018 season are both conference-bests by a healthy margin. .
A GOAL FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
The game-winning goal in the Houston match was scored by BREANNA MOORE just 15 seconds into the contest, the quickest goal in recorded history for the program.
A POTENT OFFENSE
Southern Miss' 19 goals and 3.80 goals per game average put them firmly in the upper echelon of NCAA Division I women's soccer, with the latter mark tied for the top scoring offense in the country.
THOU SHALL NOT SCORE
The Ladyjacks notched a shutout in the victory over Texas Southern, and now have 22 such wins out of the 36 wins accrued during the past three seasons.
WINNING IS WHAT WE DO
Stephen F. Austin has won ten or more games in eight of the past nine seasons, and has not finished under .500 since the 2002 season.
NO DAYS OFF
Junior defender TYLER JOHNSON has played every minute of SFA's five matches thus far, the only player on SFA's roster to have done so.
YOUTH IS SERVED
The Ladyjacks started five underclassmen in the road match at Texas, and have seen seven underclassmen make starts at some point this season.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Stephen F. Austin has enjoyed a healthy advantage at home over the past decade, owning a 63-14-1 record at SFA Soccer Field over that span, including three undefeated home slates.
