Having garnered four out of a possible nine points in conference play thus far, the Ladyjacks (3-4-1, 1-1-1 SLC) can get right back into the thick of the league title race with positive results this weekend. History is on the side of SFA, as the Ladyjacks own the advantage in both all-time series by a healthy margin, but recent history is less so. SFA extended its winning streak over McNeese to 13 straight games last season with a 2-0 result, while Lamar earned its first two wins in the 13-game series history with SFA, once during the regular season and again in the 2017 Southland Tournament title game.
McNeese sits tied atop the league standings with Abilene Christian and a total tally of 21 points (three in league play). The Cowgirls have had a campaign of mixed results thus far, earning big wins over Arkansas and Texas State and playing TCU to a 1-0 decision, but also dropping games to URTGV and Southeastern Louisiana. The offense has been there for the Cowgirls, as the team averages just over two goals a game and three players have scored at least three times. Morgan Middleton is tied for fifth in the Southland Conference in goals, with five, while Anna Watson has dished out three assists thus far. Goalkeeper Emma Roccaforte has posted two shutouts to go along with a 1.01 GAA and a .833 save percentage.
Sunday's feature against Lamar offers the Ladyjacks a chance at avenging a pair of losses to Lamar last season. The first came via heartbreaker, as a penalty kick awarded in the 86thminute sealed the victory for Lamar, their first ever in the all-time series with SFA in 12 tries. The second came in the Southland Tournament title game and denied the 'Jacks their first conference tournament title since 2012. Kelso Peskin leads the Cardinals with five goals on the season, while teammates Madison Ledet, Lucy Ashworth and Amelia Fullmer all have three or more assists on the season.
For the 'Jacks, a myriad of issues has limited the offense throughout the regular season, as the 'Jacks have tallied just four goals this season and have been held scoreless in their past two matches. SFA will need to improve upon a conference-low .444 goals-per-game average in order to compete for a league title and earn their way back to the Southland Conference Tournament for a tenth straight season. Defensively, the 'Jacks have had largely positive results this season, posting three shutouts and having allowed just three goals to non-ranked opponents this season.
