NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin track and field team returns from a nearly two-week hiatus from competition this weekend, as all the Southland Conference's best will be on display in San Antonio as part of the 2018 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The three-day meet will be hosted by the University of the Incarnate Word and will take place both on UIW's campus and two other locations in close proximity to it. The steeplechase and multi-events will both take place at Trinity University, while the throwing events will take place at the NEISD Athletic Fields. The remaining events are scheduled to take place at Incarnate Word's Benson Stadium.
Having battled to a second-place finish on the men's side and third-place finish on the women's in the indoor season, SFA is looking to get back to the winning ways it displayed in last season's outdoor meet, resulting in a championship for the women's team, the 33rd conference title for the program overall. To do so, SFA will find itself competing against several conference teams at the top, including rival Sam Houston State, which took both titles in the indoor season. A successful spring for the 'Jacks has them primed for a strong showing at this weekend's meet as they look to add to their program's title tally.
The Southland Indoor Track & Field Championships will be streamed on the Southland Digital Network. Visit southland.org/live or download Southland Conference app, available for iPhone, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku. Live results will also be available for the meet, and fans are encouraged to follow the 'Jacks (@SFA_TFXC) and Southland Conference (@SouthlandSports) on Twitter for updates on top finishes in each event.
After a split squad weekend back on April 19-21, in which some of the team traveled westward to compete in California while the remainder stayed back in Waco to take part in the Michael Johnson Invitational, the 'Jacks are coming off a weekend away from competition.
Heading into the conference meet, SFA has 44 athletes ranked inside the top eight on the tfrrs.org Southland outdoor performance lists across the 21 men's and women's events.
Action begins on Friday with men's and women's multi-events starting at 9:00 a.m. while an assortment of field event finals run from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A pair of long distance races, the 5000 and 10000m, will take place Friday evening beginning at 7:30 and 8:10 p.m., respectively.
On Saturday, multi-events will resume at 9:00 a.m. to start the day while the remaining field event finals will begin at 3:00 p.m. Running events will begin at 3:00 p.m. and continuing through 8:00 p.m., with the 3000m steeplechase concluding the day's competition.
The final day of competition, Sunday will kick off with the discus and high jump finals, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The 4x100 relay will kick off the running events for the day, with the concluding event of the meet being the 4x400 relay, set to take place at 3:35 p.m. on Sunday.
Awards will be presented after the conclusion of each event's final.
