PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Propelled by victories on the first, second, third and fifth singles lines, the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team captured a 4-1 non-conference triumph at Prairie View A&M Friday afternoon. The victory put an end to a four-match losing skid for SFA and got the Ladyjacks' three-match weekend started on a positive note.
"We battled through some tough conditions this afternoon which were made a little tougher after we dropped the doubles point," stated SFA head coach Jon McLaughlin. "I was proud of our ability to refocus and invest in the discipline necessary to get the four singles wins, however. This is a positive way to begin an important weekend."
Things got off to a rocky start for the Ladyjacks despite a 6-1 triumph by Darinka Tiboldi and Siân Payne on the number-three doubles line. That win evened things at 1-1 in the tandem flights but Prairie View A&M grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the match by way of its 6-4 victory on the number-two line. Kaja Ljubic and Armelle Cerdan were on the losing end of that match but made sure to bounce back once singles play got going.
Both Gabi Guilarte and Tiboldi dropped just two games total through their singles matches on the first and second singles lines respectively. Guilarte registered a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Stacy Lackey in top-flight one-on-one action and Tiboldi posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Neharika Rama on line to to push the visitors ahead for good.
Payne fared just as well as her teammates in singles play, snapping a 10-match losing streak in singles action by way of a 6-2, 6-1 at line three over Jimena Duran-Castellanos to push SFA one point away from victory.
Cerdan sewed up the Ladyjacks' second triumph of the season by posting a 6-3, 6-4 win against Shaddae Findley in number five singles action.
At the time the match concluded, Ljubic had tied her number-five singles match at 1-1 with Constanza Aranguiz with a 6-0 victory in the second set and Vera Carvalho was two games away of tying things up in her sixth-flight singles bout against Timara Maxwell.
SFA travels back to Nacogdoches this evening to prepare for a two-match Southland Conference weekend. Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m., the Ladyjacks are set to take on league rival Incarnate Word at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
