Cerdan and Kamal claim singles wins for SFA
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Matching wits against the squad that has won the last two Southland Conference regular season titles, the Stephen F. Austin tennis team challenged the Islanders up and down the lineup in singles play before dropping a hard-fought 5-2 match to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Schlief Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon.
"We had a lack of fight and energy in doubles play but we did a great job of bouncing back in singles," commented SFA head coach Jon McLaughlin. "To bounce back and create the kind of energy we did against a team that has lost just two regular season Southland Conference matches over the last three seasons was extremely positive."
Armelle Cerdan and Kaja Ljubic fell in their second-flight doubles match to Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miquel by a 6-1 tally and the Islanders completed their doubles point win by receiving a 6-3 win by Luna Dormet and Hortense Boscher over Gabi Guilarte and Nida Kamal on the top doubles line.
The Islanders clinched the match by winning the fifth, third and second singles flight in that order. Ljubic took only three games from Vicens Miquel in her 6-1, 6-2 loss on the fifth line as did Siân Payne against Dormet in the number-three singles match which went final by the same score.
Darinka Tiboldi fared slightly better against Jelena Dzinic in the second singles flight, grabbing six games from the Islanders but fell 6-4, 6-2.
Cerdan broke up the Islanders' shutout try by coming back from a 6-2 setback to Trigona to force a third set with her 6-4 win in the second set. In the third and final frame, SFA's sophomore finished Trigona off with a 1-0 (10-5) win.
Kamal cut the Islanders' lead down to two with her 6-3, 7-6 (6-4) victory over Carolina Bulatovic on the number six line before the most competitive match of the afternoon came to a close.
Guilarte and Boscher found themselves locked in a great match at number-one singles but when the dust settled it was Boscher who claimed a 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-1) win to finished off the visitors' win.
Friday afternoon, the Ladyjacks start a three-day stint in the state of Arkansas by stepping out of conference play for the final time in the regular season. SFA's opponent that day will be NCAA Division II foe Harding University before the Ladyjacks head to Conway, Ark., for a Sunday match against Southland Conference foe Central Arkansas at noon.
