
Murphy’s Conference-Best Mark Leads SFA Track and Field on Opening Day of Longhorn Invitational

Six athletes place within the top eight at opening day of competition

AUSTIN, Texas – Drake Murphy ran a blistering personal best of 1:49.58 in the 800m run on the opening day of the 2018 Longhorn Invitational on Friday, setting the tone for the 'Jacks on a day in which multiple athletes would notch top-eight finishes. After the opening day of competition, the Lumberjacks are in fourth place with 22 points, while the women are in tenth with a total of three points. The two-day event will resume and conclude with another day of competition on Saturday.
Murphy, who set a new indoor record for the Lumberjacks in the 800m this winter, would finish third in the event with a 1:49.58, a time that places him atop the Southland Conference and is the second fastest all-time at SFA.
Maggie Okul placed eighth in the women's hammer throw to open competition, reaching a distance of 53.51m (175-6). In the javelin throw, Cord Neal placed third with a new personal best of 55.02 (180-6), while Noah Berney placed sixth with a distance of 48.45m (158-11). In the women's shot put, Mallory Dotson hit a mark of 13.61m (44-8) to finish eighth.
Denzel Green bested his previous personal best set last weekend at the Carl Kight Invitational, leaping to a mark of 7.71m (25-3.75) and taking second in the event, a mark that is second among Southland competitors this season.
The meet will resume with the women's 5000m race at 10:00 a.m, kicking off a packed slate of running events that will take place simultaneously with the remaining field events.
