COLLEGE STATION, Texas – After a strong indoor season which he capped off with a gold medal in the pole vault at the 2018 Southland Indoor Championships, Antonio Ruiz of the Stephen F. Austin track and field team has a chance to do something more this weekend. Ruiz will be representing SFA at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station on Friday and Saturday after qualifying at the league championship. Texas A&M will play host to the meet, with competition taking place inside Gilliam Indoor Station.
Ruiz, a junior, cleared a height of 5.50m (18-00.50), a new indoor personal best, to win the event at the Southland Conference.
"Antonio is a super competitive guy who is an excellent athlete," said SFA head track and field coach Phil Olson. "We made sure to give him every opportunity to be successful by sending him to extra meets throughout the indoor season, and I believe that gave him the confidence to reach the mark he did at the conference meet. He really works his tail off, he's always working on how to be a better student and a better pole vaulter. It's an exciting thing for our program, this community, and his very supportive family to have him there."
The pole vault finals will take place Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will air on ESPN3 on Friday and on tape delay Sunday on ESPN2. The coverage for day one begins at 5:30 p.m. while Saturday's stream is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Sunday's tape-delay airing on ESPN2 is set for 6 p.m.
Complete meet information can be found at Texas A&M's championship homepage.
