COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Antonio Ruiz capped off his strong indoor season with a 12th place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday inside Gilliam Indoor Station. Originally seeded to finish 16th in the pole vault, Ruiz moved up to the 12th spot by clearing a mark of 5.40m (17'-8.5").
"I was pleased with Antonio and was proud of how he performed," said SFA head coach Phil Olson. "After he cleared the second bar, he looked more confident and had a really nice jump at 18 1/2 on his second attempt, but pulled the bar off with his chest. He and (vaults coach) Jeff Erickson both agree that he needs to be more consistent in on his jumps early in the competition, so that will be a part of his training in the spring season.I am excited that he improved at his second championship and has many more opportunities left at the national level."
After an indoor season in which he set a new indoor personal best with a mark of 5.50m (18-00.50), Ruiz is primed to lead SFA to success in the outdoor season as well. The 'Jacks begin competition on March 16-17 at the TCU Invitational.
Hussain Alhizam of Kansas won the even with a mark of 5.70m (18-8.25).
