
Quintet of Personal Bests Lead SFA Track and Field at Day One of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas – Five personal bests – a pair in the hurdles and three in the distance events – led the Stephen F. Austin track and field program through the opening round of competition at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin on Thursday. Dominique Jackson, Kadrienne Sanders, Erick Rotich, Pedro Flores and Titus Kiplagat all achieved new personal bests in the meet on the warm, sunny Thursday afternoon.
Getting SFA started in the morning was the throwers, as Maggie Okul placed 17th in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.50m (172-3), while teammate Tierra Wilson reached a mark of 51.20m (168-0).
Competing in the early afternoon, Jackson and Sanders would both best their previous personal marks in the 400m hurdles while competing in different heats. Jackson raced to a mark of 59.18 in the opening heat of the event, while Sanders would hit a mark of 1:02.03 in the eighth heat to secure a new personal best mark for herself.
Kerry Gleason finished 12th in the 400m hurdles on the men's side with a time of 51.43, while teammate Jordan Washington ran to a time of 55.45 in the event.
In the evening session, SFA's distance unit came prepared to make some waves of its own. Pedro Flores led off with a PR of 3:55.38 to finish in the top eight of his heat. Following that, Erick Rotich raced to a new low in the 3000m steeplechase at 9:22.97 to finish eighth, two spots ahead of teammate Larry Deramus (9:36.80). In the women's 3000m steeplechase, Brittany Innis represented well, finishing sixth in the event with a mark of 10:50.78. Closing things out in the final event of the night was Titus Kiplagat, who placed 18th in the men's 5000m race with a PR time of 14:57.74.
Action resumes tomorrow at 9:00 a.m., beginning with the men's discus. The 4x100 and 4x400 relays will take place beginning at 9:35 a.m, including the current SFA program record holders in the 4x100 relay.
